Her pride. His prejudice. Their passion. As headstrong as she is beautiful, Lady Cassandra Vernham defied convention when she refused to marry the man who had compromised her. Now, estranged from her family, Cassandra struggles to make ends meet. A recent auction of her jewels has brought her a modicum of relief, but one of the most valuable lots was never paid for by the highest bidder: handsome, rakish Viscount Ambury. Cassandra needs that money badly, and not to buy a new hat. Ambury has only to look at Cassandra to begin imagining her in his bed . . . He has not settled that outstanding debt for a reason. He suspects that the expensive baubles were stolen, perhaps even by Cassandra herself. Erotic fantasies about her notwithstanding, the vixen is not to be trusted, for she has already destroyed his good friend-the man she refused to marry who later lost his life in a duel, which Ambury suspects was fought over Cassandra. But nothing is as it seems . . . As the seductive lord and the scandalous beauty are drawn together, the passion that flares between them will illuminate shocking secrets that will change both their lives forever . . .… (mehr)

This just missed the mark for me. I didn't feel any of their feelings for each other, they were attracted and then just suddenly in love. I found the hero a little unappealing as well. I think Hunter was going for really "masterful" heroes in these first two books, and it's just not really my type. It seemed long, but that could have been partly because I wasn't engaging in the story as much as I'd like. ( )

Intriguing plot, just not my cup of tea. ( )

I loved the characters, the humor, and the intrique. Fun story. I liked the openness of their sexual relationship with each other. I wish they would have been more open in other areas. ( )

Lady Cassandra Vernham is a fallen woman through no fault of her own. She now lives with her Aunt Sophie who is single and has her own share of men of the world.

Viscount Ambury also is a man of the world and in private a detective to the rich and famous. Cassandra is at the heart of many a tangled web he attempts to unravel.

I enjoyed the touch of uniquness of this book. Not only has our heroine had to face the world pretty much on her own and present a cold face to many she has held firm to her friends and her warm heart. She is a free and independant thinker who does not always succeed as many books before have led a reader to believe. Cassandra is vulnerable. Her sharp mind and logical train of thought however has prevented many a pit fall.

Ambury is a rake and very knowledgable. Hunter wisely does not dwell on this facet of his character but rather on his quick mind and his good friends. A very good read and slightly off the beaten path. ( )

I liked the setup and the characters, but the romance fell flat for me. Madeline Hunter is very good at showing her characters longing for each other, and that was missing in this book. The declarations of love felt like they came out of nowhere.

The plot was interesting enough that I'm going to read the first book of the series. ( )
