The story is about the journey a female cat takes to ensure that her master is taken care of after the passing of his father. As the youngest brother he received only the cat when the family assets where split. In order to make sure her master was going to have money, the cat hunted and brought gifts to the king, and said that they were from the Marquis of Carabas. The cat was creating an identity for her master. The king and his daughter eventually met the fake Marquis, and they fell in love. The king felt it suitable for his daughter and the man to marry. Thereafter, the master and puss in boots were rich and lived happily ever after. Genre: Fairytale - This book is a good example of a fairytale because it is a classic story that has be retold many times and it is hard to identify the first author. It includes characters that are believable but as time goes on they come unbelievable like a talking cat. There is a definite problem in the book which would be the conflict, then in the end there is a quick resolution and a happy ending. Although, the ending is very sudden and kind of weird. I do not think I would read this book to a class because it is all about a cat who lies to get his way and in the end eats the person who would get him in trouble for lying. It seems like it is telling the students it is okay to lie, they will get their way and be happy in the end. Plot: The plot of this book is that there is a cat called Puss in Boots who wants his master to be wealthy and powerful so he lies to the king to come and see his master. He continues to lie to show the king how rich and wonderful his master is when he really is not. Then he meets an ogre who turns into a mouse and he eat him so that all the lies will be true now. So his master will live happily ever after with the princes. Now, I do not like the plot of this book, but to be a fairytale it seems just about right. If the ending were different it would not have a happy ending and it would no longer be a fairytale. The plot needs to stay the same to be Puss in Boots, although maybe a few things could have changed for it to not be so bad, but I am not sure what exactly. I loved this story. The picture of Puss reminded me of my own cat, Cheeto. I could really relate because if Cheeto could talk he would be the character of Puss and Boots.
For classroom use, the story could be used as a unit of traditional literature. I could also use the story by asking students who have cats as pets and visualize their cat in the story. At the end, the class as a whole could create their own versions of Puss in Boots with their own pets. ( )
