A little girl chef dons her apron, singing and dancing around the kitchen as she shows us what to do. Argueta's gift in seeing beauty, magic and fun in everything around him makes this book a treasure -- avocados are like green precious stones, salt falls like rain, cilantro looks like a little tree and the spoon that scoops the avocado from its skin is like an excavating tractor. As in the previous cooking poems, "Guacamole" conveys the fun and pleasure of making something delicious and healthy to eat for people you really love.… (mehr)

A story on the elements that make guacamole. Translated in both English and Spanish. The use of illustrations that show each ingredient while it is being spoken of. The descriptive text can help students when they write stories because it tells many details of each ingredient. This can also be used as a cook book if you want to make guacamole. ( )

It tells the story in English and translates on the same page in Spanish. It describes the intricacies that guacamole posses. It goes through each ingredient and uses figurative language to describe it. This would be good to help students learn how to be more descriptive in their writing. ( )

This is a cute read for young readers! This poetry book about cooking is great for all readers, but also ESL readers and for units about Spanish and other cultures. The main words are in Spanish, but you will find that the words are also in English under the Spanish text. I love that the text tells of a little girl making guacamole and tells the instructions of how to make it. To incorporate this story into the classroom the teacher could make guacamole in the classroom following the directions in the text. ( )

Summary:
This book is about a little girl who is singing and dancing around her kitchen cooking guacamole. She tells you all of the ingredients that she uses to make guacamole. She also explains how much fun it is cooking all in a poem.

Personal Reaction:
This book was not my favorite but it was a cute little poem on how much a little girl enjoys cooking.

Classroom Extensions:

1. The teacher can make guacamole and bring it so everyone in the class can try it.

2. The teacher can also bring the ingredients to school so the class as a whole can try to cook some guacamole.
