As World War II was nearing its end Hitler desperately tried to land a decisive blow against the Allies. He ordered U-Boat U-864 to transport blueprints, parts and scientists to Japan, providing the Japanese with Germany's most advanced rocket and aircraft technology. It was a decision that could have lengthened the war. With this technology the Japanese would divert more Allied troops to the war in the Pacific and give Germany time to regroup. British codebreakers based at Bletchley Park discovered Hitler's plan and, working with the Norwegian resistance movement, the RAF sent its 'Dambuster' squadron on bombing raids against German naval installations in an attempt to destroy the U-Boat and its deadly cargo. However, U-864 evaded all attempts to destroy it and was able to slip out to sea. Off the Norwegian coast the British submarine HMS Venturer lay in wait for the U-Boat, and the two would engage in a cat-and-mouse battle that would change the course of the war. It is the only recorded instance of a submarine being sunk by another submarine while both were submerged and many of the men abroad HMS Venturer would be awarded for their courage by King George VI. Jerome Preisler and Kenneth Sewell recreate one of the least-known, but most crucial, victories of World War II. Drawing on military and naval archives, interviews with those involved and archive photographs Code Name Caesar brings the tense, action-packed underwater battle alive with all the suspense of a thriller.… (mehr)

Kniha čerpající především z dobových pramenů, korespondence a depeší, dramaticky líčí přípravy a osudový konec plánované triumfální mise německé ponorky U-864 do Japonska. Kromě základního příběhu kniha obsahuje celou řadu zajímavých poznatků o německém a japonském ponorkovém loďstvu, o britské tajné službě a speciální spojenecké bombardovací jednotce. ( )

Having recently been on a WWII kick, and becoming acquainted with this author on Facebook and Twitter, I had to read his book.

Although I am not an expert on WWII, I thought I had a rather complete knowledge of it. Each book I read about it shows me how much I don’t actually know. For instance, in reading this book I learned that the Germans had a submarine base in Norway, that the Norwegians were pretty pissed about it and did everything they could to help the Allies destroy it and the Germans were really bad at coming up with clever names for their bases.

The main focus of this book however is U-Boat 864 and its “secret cargo”, and the fact that the Allies knew about it, and knew it couldn’t reach Japan. When the bombing of the base didn’t destroy it, the Allies had to fall back and try something different. The British submarine HMS Venturer was sent to destroy the U-Boat. This is the only documented case of a submarine sinking another sub while both were underwater (Spoiler? Does anyone not know how WWII ended?).

Although a true account, free of any dramatization, this is a thrilling account. We learn some of the history of Norway and the occupation by the Germans. A little bit about bombing missions, why it is so dangerous for a sub to sink another sub while both are underwater, and why it had now developed into a controversial issue for the Norwegians.

I really enjoyed this book and recommend it. ( )
