An inventive concept for an alphabet book, bringing in art from the Met collections for each letter, from Apples to Zigzags. Details from four paintings for each letter present a different view of the object; some objects are simple (cat, nose), others more abstract (game, light). ( )

The Museum ABC by the Metropolitan Museum of Art is a non-fiction informational book. For each letter of the alphabet, there are four paintings for young readers to find the item that starts with that letter. All the paintings are pictures that are on exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book would be good for nursery school children and kindergartners who are learning the alphabet. It is also a good way for young children to start learning art appreciation.

I do love this. It seems to be a simpler version of [b:Museum 123|1544698|Museum 123|The Metropolitan Museum Of Art|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1390429396s/1544698.jpg|1536977], in that it is simply A is for Apples / [four different pictures of apples]." I really appreciated the diversity of works chosen, as all regions of the world, many eras, and many kinds of pieces (including some utilitarian crafts) were included.

I only wish that the full pix were also included, or at least noted in such a way that we could see them. The detail for one of the pictures for "Star" is intriguing, but the end notes say "detail from a basin / Iranian / early 14th century." I don't have high hopes of finding an image of the whole basin....

But now I really do wish I could get 123, as described by members of the Childrens Books group!" ( )

REVIEW:
This ABC book covers the 26 letters of the alphabet by picking a word to represent each letter and then compiling four pictures of art from the Metropolitan Art Museum in NYC that represent that word. For example, "B is for boat" has various pictures of boats (different mediums of art) taken from the museum itself. I love how this book combines learning the alphabet with learning about types of museums. The pictures can also spark various discussions.

MEDIA: Pictures of paintings collected from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The paintings themselves are of a variety of styles.

GENRE: Informational
This book is an ABC book that belongs to the broader category of informational. It is informational because readers can master the ABCs and find words that associate with the 26 letters.

USES:
(1) I can ask, "what other words start with H?" etc...
(2) Students can learn about art museums, and perhaps visit one.
(3) In kindergarten, my class wrote our own alphabet book. Groups were given letters and we had to come up with a word and then design the artwork.

AGE-APPROPRIATENESS: younger elementary, such as kindergarten ( )
