Expressive artwork—suggestive of inkwash and watercolor--combined with evocative and realistic story lines made tears come to my eyes. Volume 1 is a touching introduction to the children of various of genders and ages at the foster home. Although not plot-driven, the relationships and character ambitions can be fruitfully explored in future volumes. I think I might be in love with Taiyō Matsumoto's art ... I may have loved this as much as Tekkonkinkreet (which is to say, a lot). It's not just the story (and there's not really a story in the traditional sense), but it's the artwork, the characters and the atmosphere Matsumoto created. I may end up buying this (and future volumes as they're translated) for myself. Sunny is the story of children and a few teenagers who live in a home (I believe they're described as orphans in reviews/etc, but that is not true, many of them have parents, they just live in the home and away from their parents, more like a foster home). Each chapter involves all the characters, but the central focus shifts from one character to another. What results is a surprisingly moving graphic novel about the lives of these kids and the people who surround them. It's but wonderful and kind of really sad. I really cannot wait for the next volume, which is set to come out in November. Zeige 5 von 5 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

Depending on the ending this can hit too hard at home. It's the reason why slice of life stories don't always work for me and I tend to avoid them.
But the thing is... Stories with these kinds of subject matter will always have some kind of bittersweet ending. Because that's what I've seen many times in real life. Some kids (and parents) will end up happy, some disappear, some end up broken, some will always struggle, some will find some sort of peace.
Reviews of other people didn't help very much because I haven't found someone who actually came from the same kind of background but are not Japanese. But the fact that the mangaka is, does set my mind at ease.
