Then one day the green beans came into town like bandits and took hostage of anyone that ate beans including her parents. At first she is happy but then lonely so she sets off to go save them. In order to get her bound and gaged parents free she has to eat the green beans. Review: Such a funny book! Especially because I have two picky eaters. The illustrations are more of a cartoon feel which is perfect since this could never be a real story. Martha hates green beans, but her parents make her eat them every Tuesday night for dinner. One day, a mob of particularly nasty, sleazy-looking green beans roll into town making mischief, hatching havoc, and pretty much being all-around mean beans. When they kidnap Martha's parents, she knows she must rescue them. But how? Will Martha end up having to eat her most hated and feared of all vegetables? LaRochelle's completely silly story has a wonderfully ridiculous flavor and will ring true for many families who struggle with picky eaters. Some parents might not appreciate that, in the end, Martha wins her dinner table battle over what she won't eat, but might still appreciate that she at least tries. Mark Fearing's bold, sassy mixed digital and media illustrations capture character's moods and reactions with comic flare. The mean green bean gang, with their cowboy/pirate-esque fashions are despicably delightful. The expressions on Martha's dog's face, alone, are worth the read. Pure and total silliness, with giggles all around, thanks, in part to Mark Fearing' s hysterical illustrations! ( )
