I thought this was weird, but it's interesting and surprising and I know for a fact at least two little kids like it! My only remaining misgiving is that Wilfred's hair doesn't grow back on its own. ( )

Wilfred is a large, hairy, generous monster who just wants a friend, but the village people - all of whom are bald, and winter is coming - take advantage of his kindness and take his hair. Wilfred's one friend makes them give it back; they sew it into a suit with a zipper. ( )

I really enjoyed this story. This is a heartwarming tale of friendship and loyalty that all ages can enjoy. With lovable characters and a plot to cause a lot of laughs. Higgins creates a way to warm your heart and teach morals such as bravery, friendliness, truthfulness, and forgiveness. The illustrations in this picture book are colorful and fun to look at, and the facial expressions in the characters as well. The text and illustrations are blended together add a whole other level on top of the text. I would explain the story's style as protagonist, along with expressionistic because there was a lot of exaggeration of illustrations.

This a heartwarming picture book about a lovable furry monster named Wilfred. He just wants to make a friend and fit in so he finds a little boy from a nearby town and they become friends and decide to play together. The townspeople have other ideas and want to shave Wilfred and use his fur for their own purposes. The boy tries to help Wilfred but Wilfred ends up helping the boy when he gets caught in a snowstorm and they become even better friends in the end as well as teaching the townspeople not to be so greedy and mean. This book has very interesting illustrations that some kids may find creepy or different, but others might find them cute. They are sketch-like but have detail and color and keep your attention. The language used is pretty basic and understandable for younger readers. However, there are some larger vocabulary words that could be difficult. There are a few really valuable lessons taught through the story. Children can learn about friendship and how it is important to help others in need rather than be greedy. It also teaches a lesson about fitting in. Wilfred scares away the children at first and he shaves his fur because the townspeople tell him he needs to, to fit in. This is a great story to use for LEA reading and teaching (Leeland,Lewison & Harste, 2013, p.50) because the story line is simple and it has themes that many kids may have felt before and can relate to, so telling it in their own words/language will be beneficial and straightforward. Teachers would then write what their students say and later have the student read their own version of the story. It's also a good book to help start conversations and discussions about peer pressure and trying to fit in. ( )
