Fiction. Romance. HTML:They chose their own roads, but they couldn't change their destination. . .

Twenty years ago, Vanessa Massey couldn't wait to graduate from high school and make her small hometown of Danton Hill a distant memory--despite an indelible friendship she'd recently forged. But life has largely ignored her plans, and time has summoned her back to the shores of Lake Ontario for a school reunion that could change everything.

After four years as Danton Hill High's resident outcast, Adam Blackburn went on to a successful career in New York City. Yet now he's drawn homeward for a reunion he's surprisingly curious to attend--if he and his car survive the fierce summer storm that's hit. Adam always hated storms and their destruction. And sure enough, he soon collides with another vehicle in the blinding rain. But it turns out the driver is the one person he'd hoped to see: Vanessa.

Reunited by Mother Nature, the two take shelter in an abandoned farmhouse where they are forced to decipher their unresolved history. Together, they'll unravel the twists of fate that have brought them to the present--and discover the remarkable truth that may carry them through the future. . .

This was my first read by Joseph Pittman and loved it! I am looking forward to reading more of his work! This was a poignant love story which was fascinating and keeps you hanging on (a page turner) with a couple who had known each other since childhood and drifted apart from after high school and found their way back to each other. Very well written---Two lost souls – with some paranormal, mystery of another couple and their great love, a log cabin, mystery and a good ending! ( )

This is the first book I've received from the Member Giveaway program.

I wish I had known this story includes fantasy elements -- specifically ghosts. I don't like that kind of story at all. But, I was so thrilled to get a book from this program, I read it and will try to put my dislike for the fantasy "genre" aside.

So, here we have a story of two people, Vanessa and Adam, who've known each other since childhood, but were never really friends. Adam is a bit of a nerd; Vanessa is the archetype of popular -- pretty, a cheerleader with a cool boyfriend. Cool, but a jerk. Circumstances lead to Vanessa agreeing to go to the Senior Prom with Adam -- and they have a good time. They also meet briefly about 11 years later and "hook up". In spite of these short-lived relationships, they think about each other often and want very much to see each other at the 20th reunion of their high school class.

In parallel, we have a glimpse of the lives of Venture and Aiden, lovers from a couple of generations ago, who are tragically separated -- enough of a glimpse to see the many coincidences between the two couples. Are there forces beyond our understanding or perception that unite soul-mates from the past? This is the question Vanessa and Adam can't help but think about as they learn details about Venture and Aiden.

So, here's what I liked in this book: the stories of Vanessa's and Adam's lives (and Venture's and Aiden's). Vanessa and Adam are well developed characters, and interesting people. The flashbacks to before the reunion were well written and held my interest.

What I didn't like: well, the life after death stuff. Not that it was badly done; just not my cup of tea. I also found the dialogue between Vanessa and Adam during their reunion didn't quite ring true....too much drama (running out of the room); too much search for meaning to be a true conversation between old friends. And too many parallels between the two couples...not a lot of ambiguity.

All in all, I think it's a book worth reading if you are interested in this kind of story. The main characters have depth and interesting back stories. I'd have rated it higher except for....you know..... ( )
