I received an ARC copy of this book from Jaime Reese as a gift with no review expected at all. Do not let the length of this beautifully written story put you off. There is so much going on in the story that I was finished before I knew it. It's a romance story, detective story and suspense story all rolled into one. All of the characters both good and nasty are well shaped with their own unique qualities. It was good to see Matt, Julian and Sam again. This was no insta-love cookie cutter story but a well plotted novel. There are twists and turns throughout the story but the one constant is the connection between Cam and Hunter and even their HEA is twisted by the ingenious Ms Reese. What I really enjoyed was that while the story involved the Halfway House, it was not dependent upon the Halfway House or Matt and Julian. Highly recommended story that you will get lost in. ( )

I really liked this, although after the attack everything is lengthened quite uselessly, both the mystery and the fall of the final barriers in the relationship. And those "Sir" innuendoes? They aren't congruent with the personality and Cam's life experiences. ( )

With a good editor, this could have been a five-star novel.

It's nearly typo-free. All the emotional hits are there. But as described below, the edit-fails doom it to mediocrity.

The series concept is interesting, and this novel is complex enough to be satisfying. The protagonists are good, if not always given enough depth. I really like the growing conflict neither is aware of for a big chunk of the story. And, gods, the panic attack scenes left me in tears. I felt for these characters.

But the overwrought prose often verges into juvenile in sentence sameness and overstating everything. I took a lot of breaks in order to avoid DNF-ing, even though I could tell all the elements were there as noted above. Some parts flow well, but others come off as choppy, and/or disorganized. There is WAY too much telling (after dialogue or actions already showed me). Like, not just over-stating many thoughts and actions, but restating actions or dialogue. All the time.

If I ever read any more of these, or anything by this author, it will be on sale, and I expect much the same reaction. ( )
