This story tore at my heartstrings from the very beginning. Diego is such a great guy, he is fighting hard to make an honest living after pulling back from the brink, and all it takes is one bad judgment call and he is in a world of trouble. The things that happen to him and how he valiantly fights what seems to be fate had me on the edge of my seat and rooting for him all the way. Luckily, this being an AJ story, I knew there would be a happy ending – but it seemed very, very far off at times.

Diego finally thinks he has gotten his life back together, only to make one wrong turn, and end up with not just a speeding ticket, but a DUI. To make things worse, the judge decides to set an example and gives him time in prison. True, it may be ‘only’ two days, but he will end up with a record. What a nightmare! He may be able to arrange things with his job, since he has a very understanding boss, but what about the man he has just met? He will surely never understand, being a probation officer and on the right side of the law. The anxiety about the relationship that had just barely started and the abject fear of his prison term and what might happen to him during it were so real, I was on emotional tenterhooks the whole time.

Vincent, Diego’s blind date and newest obsession, is a great guy. He is quiet, organized, and incredibly supportive. He is also determined not to let Diego push him away, no matter how much chaos seems to congregate around the man, and no matter how much Diego seems to think Vincent will not like him or stick with him. Even though Diego tells the story, Vincent comes across loud and clear. He is the loving partner more people should have – the world would be a far better place!

"He’s Gone Home" is a very emotional story, one that deals with loss, overcoming alcoholism and trying to create a new existence. It is also a tale of hope, and an incredible love story. If you like seeing men win against the odds and obstacles that come their way, if you enjoy stories that make you want to punch the "idiots in charge" in the nose for stupidity, and if an emotional roller coaster that will have you holding your breath on more than one occasion is your thing, you will probably like this novella as much as I do.
