Fiction. Literature. Romance. Humor (Fiction.) HTML:NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY LIBRARY JOURNAL

RITA finalist and New York Times bestselling author Ruthie Knox kicks off a steamy series set in the city that never sleeps—alone, at least.

/>
May Fredericks hates New York. Which is fair enough, since New York seems to hate her back. After relocating to Manhattan from the Midwest to be with her long-distance boyfriend, NFL quarterback Thor Einarsson, May receives the world’s worst marriage proposal, stabs the jerk with a shrimp fork, and storms off alone—only to get mugged. Now she’s got no phone, no cash, and no friends. How’s a nice girl supposed to get back to safe, sensible Wisconsin?

Frankly, Ben Hausman couldn’t care less. Sure, it’s not every day he meets a genuine, down-to-earth woman like May—especially in a dive in the Village—but he’s recovering from an ugly divorce that cost him his restaurant. He wants to be left alone to start over and become a better man. Then again, playing the white knight to May’s sexy damsel in distress would be an excellent place to start—if only he can give her one very good reason to love New York.

“Knox writes such sultry, detailed romance. The sexual tension and the sex itself are very hot. . . . Highly recommend this story.”—Smexy Books

Truly is another Knox classic. Well written, heartwarming, sweet, super sexy with a dash of heartbreak and soul-searching, I devoured this fabulous story. . . . An absolutely fabulous read about two imperfect people . . . I can’t wait to see what Ruthie Knox will come up with next.”—The Brunette Librarian

“Knox is rapidly becoming my go-to author for excellent contemporary romance, providing all of the necessary components to a great read: accessible characters, solid plot, well-paced events and a whole lotta steam. And she delivers it all here. . . . Knox is amazingly talented at incorporating emotion with the physical that fairly sizzles with heat. I strongly encourage readers to immediately read this wonderful book.”—Pretty Sassy Cool

“Knox is an incredible writer. She has the gift of making ordinary people larger than life. She adds a special blend of humor, creative dialogue, unique characters, and an interesting plot with its own magical flare. . . . These two vastly different people will discover the magic of life, love, and happiness in a new way. . . . They will console each other about their past failures, cheer each other on, and find their chemistry is much more than sexual. . . . I highly recommend this book.”—Smut Book Junkie Book Reviews

“Well written and my favorite Ruthie Knox book to date, Truly is a powerful story and an amazing journey of self-discovery with a sexy love story thrown in for good measure!”—Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

Truly is one of those stories that just got under my skin and into my heart. . . . It’s not just a romance, it’s a story of two people finding a new path at those crossroads in life we all have to face from time to time. And while the romance between Ben and May is hot and intimate, it is their individual discovery of the path into their future that really hit home with me. This was the story that made me a Ruthie Knox fan for life. If you haven’t read it, I wholeheartedly recommend it. The writing is top notch and...… (mehr)

It's not a 5-star because the writing, while tight and had great characters, wasn't as lovely as I'd expect from a 5 star book. (See: [b:The Hating Game|25883848|The Hating Game|Sally Thorne|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1467138679s/25883848.jpg|45762345] ) The underlying plot was just a wee bit unbelievable (short timeframe, though I'm always on board for insta-lust, there's some other bits as well that were like...c'mon)

So, why a 4 star not a 3 star? Man, I love Ruthie Knox's messy characters. They fall far short of perfect. In this book, May comes into her own and while that is interesting in its own right, it's incredibly interesting to see that development take place in the safe harbor of her & Ben's 'relationship.'

Because Ben. I feel like I know Ben. Ben was very very real to me. He was a bit of a jackass, he was a bit grumpy, he often took it out on the wrong person and he couldn't stand when he did it. But what else was he? The kind of man that sees the woman. Just sees her and let's her grow and breathe, even within an intense relationship. He's the kind of guy who clearly isn't flowers-romantic, but giving the last taco romantic, cooking breakfast romantic, spending time romantic, and generous romantic. Ben's a giver, just not a giver of pretty words or soft and sparkly things. Again, I so know Ben.

Ruthie Knox books hit me in all the right ways because of these flawed characters. No perfect family to be seen, no perfect hero or heroine. This was a story of a people pleaser and a self-aware jackass learning to love each other. ( )

I'm not sure what I expected from Truly. All I know is I felt like I had to read it... and I was thrilled when the publisher approved my request. I'll be honest - the only reason I even wanted to read this book is because the main character is a Wisconsin transplant living in New Jersey. (I'm also a Wisconsin transplant living in New Jersey, so I felt some camaraderie with May from the beginning.) But the story was so, so good even without the little stabs of nostalgia from reading about midwest living.

May wasn't a big fan of the east coast even before her boyfriend's disastrous, insulting, inebriated, very public proposal. It didn't help that the whole disaster (shrimp fork stabbing and all) was caught on video and immediately went viral. It didn't help that she got mugged and ended up stranded in Manhattan with nothing but a $5 bill and a Metro card to her name. It certainly didn't help that when she found herself at a Packers bar in the middle of the day, there wasn't a single person who looked midwest nice.

Ben was still reeling from the end of his marriage and the collapse of his cooking career. He'd once owned a successful restaurant with his wife, been part of a huge cookbook franchise, been on his way to great things, and now he had a pile of money from the divorce settlement and not much else. The stress from owning a restaurant, and from constantly fighting with his wife, had made him angry and closed off. He was done with emotions, thank you very much. He'd prefer to be alone.

So what happens when fearlessly optimistic May strikes up a conversation with the biggest crankypants she's ever met? Not a lot, until Ben's friend bets him that he can't even pretend to be nice. As Ben makes an effort to help out a fellow Wisconsinite, his carefully constructed walls start falling down.

This book was so good. The character development, the plot development, even the side characters - everything is perfectly written. May's sister, her parents, Ben's family, everybody is a fully fleshed out character. It's awesome to read something, especially an uncorrected proof that's so well-written and well-developed. I stayed up late reading this book the day I started it. Then I got up early to read more before work. Then I came home from work and read until I finished. It's that good.

Is the second book out yet? Can I just buy everything Ruthie Knox has ever written?

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC. ( )

I absolutely LOVED this story. It was a fantastic read filled with humor, angst, and romance. The characters of May and Ben are perfect together. Total opposites that smooth out each others rough edges. I originally read this when Ruthie Knox posted it as a serial on wattpad and I couldn't wait to read it again. I highly recommend this one to everyone. ( )

I read this book when it was serialized on Wattpad. (Learned reading a book bit by bit is not my thing. Guess I'm too impatient!) I'm mentioning how I read this book as it may have some bearing on my review thoughts.

I loved the first part of this book, when May meets Ben. Ben introduces her to his New York City. May, Ben, the Bees and New York City was some of the best writing from miss Knox but once they left NYC and got to Wisconsin and May's Family I started losing interest. As I mentioned above, I'm not sure if it was because I was tired of reading in serial form or if the story lost it's appeal. The last few chapters seemed anticlimactic. (I loved the Honey Shop idea!)

I have loved everything Ruthie Knox has written so I'm not sure if it's the story (it was going so well until the scene change) or the reading format.
