My Gosh! Where were you hidden, Julio?

I ended with tears in my eyes and my heart bleeding for both, but most of all for Antho, he not even has the reliefs of forgetfulness.

A story told epistolaryly with an aesthetics that reminds lightly Matrix, in a futuristic context and with an atemporal essence. .

And a great writing style, cutting to the bone, lyrical in its simplicity and constantly connected with emotion.

Right now I'm going to get myself with any other stories from Syntax universe that are published.

P.S.: I forgot: The book killed me from the quote of the dedication, awesome! ( )

When You Were Pixels was written for the M/M Romance Group's Love Has No Boundaries picture prompt event.

Well written, almost poetic, the author did a great job fulfilling the requestor's prompt. But oh man, this was intense! Dystopian, Post-Apocalyptic with a depressing ending, it's so not like the Romance HEAs I like to read. This story reminds me of the movie 50 First Dates with Drew Barrymore where she loses her memory everyday and awakens to play a video that her boyfriend/future husband made for her. It shows what happened in her life the previous day that she doesn't remember. I don't like that kind of sadness. But this story didn't promise any happy endings either, you know it'll be bittersweet, with both Antho and the assassin finding only temporary solace with each other in the darkness. Their world must have been so dismal and bleak that even the few days of comfort they had with each other was like fresh spring rain.

The love Antho finds at the end with the assassin doesn't keep this story from being sad and depressing. It only reaffirms why I stay away from plotlines like this because they make me feel bad even if the couple find love. So wish I hadn't read this as the last story before bedtime :(

Update:

I gave this story 4 Stars at first, but I've re-read this at least twice more despite the bittersweet ending and it doesn't hurt as much as it did the first time. I think I'm re-reading hoping for a happier outcome that doesn't happen. This still isn't my kind of story, but now that I've had a day for it to settle in my mind and distance myself from the sadness, I have to give it 5 stars. When You Were Pixels is one of the best stories that I've read so far in this event.

Sunny beach full of hot bodies, male and female, noisy kids and distracting cabana boys was definitely NOT the right place to read a dark tale with no HEA. However, it managed to keep my attention with no effort at all.

5 stars.

Julio, you have me on needles and pins here. Have to read more ASAP!

"...Pixels" reminded me of another story, a favourite of mine. If you liked Pixels, you'd like [b:Apples and Regret and Wasted Time|11310500|Apples and Regret and Wasted Time|Cornelia Grey|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1304742811s/11310500.jpg|16238418] by Cornelia Grey. ( )

The thing I love the best about the M/M Romance Groups "Don't Read in the Closet" events is discovering gems like this short story. Every word, every comma is perfectly placed, almost giving it the feel of poetry ...right from its title to its very last line (which brought the sting of tears to my eyes and a lump to my throat).

Highly recommended!
