Considering the rate at which I was getting rid of food at our house, I needed to start replenishing in a big way. I made plans for a trip to BJ's Wholesale Club. Because the closest BJ's is about an hour away from our house, getting there, shopping, returning home, and unpacking usually takes the better part of a day, so going there is kind of like an expedition to Everest, with coupons. Happily, I did manage to fill my cart, but not without spending exactly twice as much time shopping as I used to, and so much intense label reading that, rightfully, I should've earned a degree of some kind. Now, when your name is Eve, you tend to be a little wary of temptation scenarios, so I eyed my husband keenly. Sugar and I, it seemed, were now like old friends who hadn't seen each other in so long that when they get together it's fun but...a little awkward. Religion and food have one quintessential thing in common: they are both topics one's philosophy can become so ensconced in that they dramatically affect everything else in your life. By way of avoiding that ever-present temptation represented by The World and Everything in It, we had become a little bit like Food Monks. Pretty much, I was dividing my time between making food and writing about food...and if there was any time leftover, I did trivial stuff like pay bills, shower, brush teeth. it was amazing to me to begin to realize how very much time real food can take, and how good and satisfying that could feel. Yes, folks, it had been nearly a year into this journey and perhaps I had finally cracked: I had discovered the meaning of life in a bowl of spaghetti and meatballs. When we're kids, we're much more used to figuring stuff out, to winging it. By necessity, kids are improving all the time. As Indiana Jones once famously said, in the middle of some superhuman feat or other, "I don't know! I'm making this up as I go." "No Sugar" means: No. Sugar. No sugar in our mayonnaise. No sugar in our bacon. Not in buns or salad dressing or juice. I will not eat it in the house. I will not eat it with a mouse. And the questions just kept coming. I certainly didn't blame the kids—they were simply trying to figure out what the new rules were. Trouble is, Steve and I didn't exactly know. Moderation is the most elusive term I know. For my family specifically, I hope many things. I hope my children have learned that you can do virtually anything you set your mind to, that big ideas are worth trying, and that your biggest support network is—ideally—your family. I hope they learned that healthy eating is a choice and that lots of things in life are bad for us—sugar, alcohol, reality television—but that often the key is awareness and moderation. Lastly, I hope they learn that most things that are worthwhile—eating good food, raising happy children, having a fulfilling career—take time, thought, and energy. There are many shortcuts in life, but perhaps none that come free of consequences. Sugar is one of those things we have manipulated into giving us lots of shortcuts: to better taste, to more convenience, to ever-higher food industry profits. But at what cost? As the old saying goes, if you don't have your health, you don't have anything. | |
