This over-sized volume is a scholarly rendition of one of the most important documents in the very early (1830s) history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon). A carefully crafted and beautifully produced book, it reminds one of what is possible in the publishing world when excellence is a goal. The contents are displayed in a unique and accessible fashion. Clear and easily readable photo reproductions of each page in the original, hand-written historical document are displayed on the left page of the volume. A scholarly but accessible transcription of the content of that original page is then displayed on the right hand page of the volume. The multiple introductions to the volume are well-written and set in context the historical background and present purpose of the volume. It is not a book one would necessarily read from cover to cover, although there may be some interested in doing so. Rather, it is a book that will yield its gems through careful study and comparison, a book that will be a source of continual pleasure and enlightenment on a number of highly interesting topics related to Mormon scripture, history, revelation, present-day publications and the like.
