Fifteen-year-old Thea Wallis was born to entertain. Her mother, Oscar winning actor Cassie Hartley, thinks differently and has kept her daughter out of the spotlight since day one. Coming from showbiz royalty, it hasn't been easy to go unnoticed, but mismatched surnames, a family home in Tasmania and a low-key scriptwriter father has made this possible. Just like her cousin Rory on the hugely popular TV show Saturday Morning Dance, Thea loves to dance. She learns the show's routines off by heart each week, despite her mother's attempts to convince her that dentistry would be a far more fulfilling career choice. However, when Rory goes off the rails in LA, Thea's mother is suddenly left with no choice at all - Rory needs them and to LA they must go. Within forty-eight hours, Thea finds herself a long way from Tasmania and living her dream - on the road to Las Vegas with the Saturday Morning Dance team. It doesn't take long before Thea's talents are discovered and she's offered everything she's ever wanted on a plate, including the dance partner she's had a crush on forever. But, as her mother has always told her, Hollywood dreams come at a price. Thea soon realizes she will have to work out just how much she's willing to pay. And, ultimately, discover her own way to be Hartley.… (mehr)

Another excellent read.

Very well written, and not just about a girl's dream to be famous, but rather dives into the family dynamics of a mother not wanting her daughter to follow in her footsteps, and doing everything she can to shelter her from the reality of stardom.

Thea has dancing in her blood and she has to fight for being allowed to dance. It's not about typical teenage rebellion against the bad parents who just don't understand. Instead Thea accepts and understands where her mom is coming from, and subtly manages to get her way without openly defying her mom. There is a bit of a love story, but it's not the main focus. The main focus is on how Thea develops throughout the book.

Being Hartley is about a family whose members are mostly in the entertainment industry. Well except for Thea, the protagonist. She was being stopped by her mother in entering that world. Of course, she wants in.

In the book, they tried to solve Rory's problem to quit in her work but cannot because she's in a contract. Rory is Thea's cousin. Okay, I don't know what to tell you anymore.

Hmm, the lesson learned here I think is "be careful what you wish for". You can never have both worlds you know? You have to give up something in order to gain something. And sometimes what you want is not always what you need.

I didn't feel attached to the characters. The way they solved Rory's problem in the end is over so quickly and frankly, quite disappointing. This book is boring for me. I'm so glad I'm finished with this already. Maybe younger people will find this more appealing though. ( )
