Mystery at Golden Ridge Farm, an interdisciplinary problem-based learning unit for gifted students, is open-ended and subject to various interpretations. A local, community-supported agricultural farm has noted a mysterious lack of produce for a number of consecutive years. Unable to explain why or how the produce is disappearing, the farm owners ask the students of a local school for help in solving the mystery of the missing produce. Students work in collaboration with the farm as they assume the role of detectives and investigate the problem from every angle. Along the way, they are required to conduct independent research, evaluate their research with classmates, develop logical theories, create solutions, and prepare a formal presentation of their findings to present to a panel of judges and audience of family members and school administrators. This unit is appropriate for grades 5-8.… (mehr)

What a fun approach to learning! As the other reviewers have mentioned, this book aligns with Common Core State Standards (CCSS). I appreciate that the workbook can be used in a way that allows students to set their own goals yet continue to learn how to work in groups. I also appreciate that the introduction includes letters to teachers, parents, and students, and that the letters are not long-winded.
I hope that this type of workbook will make its way into schools around the country. ( )

What our classrooms today need more of is the kind of project-based (or problem-based) curriculum contained in this book.
I like that the author and publisher took the effort to point out how this fulfilled its particular common core benchmarks, but honestly, these kind of comprehensive, collaborative learning projects are by far the best way to engage students period.
The book outlines the project well and makes it user friendly.
Here's hoping more teachers take up this style of curriculum, perhaps using this model as template for further project-based units. ( )

This is a very well-laid out unit, supporting CCSS as well as fostering a mind-set of critical thinking. Each unit proceeds and builds upon the previous. It worked very well in my classroom.

I like the curriculum contained in this book. It would be nice to have this project (or something like this project) implemented in the local schools in town. This appears to be a good way to encourage students' self-directed learning.

I thought that Mystery at Golden Ridge Farm was a thoughtful unit that incorporates the new CCSS, while requiring students to think critically, problem solve, and take ownership of their own learning. I liked that the unit starts off with team building activities and requires students to take on the role of a leader. I liked that it incorporates open ended questions and involves the community. Overall, these lessons are practical, educational, and relevant. ( )
