I love graphic novels but what a disappointment to discover that Dexter Down Under instead of being the substantial, convoluted and deeply witty text I expected, was merely a graphic novel, and not much of a one at that.
The Oz policeman is a butch blonde woman who keeps calling everyone a bloody bastard and punching Dex: someone is enjoying killing illegal immigrants so blood-spatter expert is called from Miami to help. A series of cross continental interviews ensue [why they need his expertise for that is not explained] until Dexter finds the killer - their Dark Passengers recognise each other.
He and blondie go to the Outback and have sex. Then they are nearly killed but Dex lovingly slaughters the opposition. Blondie doesn't seem to mind - on the contrary, she takes him away to a cabin next to the sea where they do the dirty for a solid week or so. Then he flies back to Miami.
It was okay I suppose, especially for a Marvel publication, but I would never have bought it had it been made clear that this was a graphic novel, lacking in both physical and metaphorical substance. (
