From author T. Kingfisher comes a collection of fairy-tale retellings for adults. By turns funny and dark, sad and lyrical, this anthology draws together in one volume such stories as "The Wolf and the Woodsman," "Loathly," and "Bluebeard's Wife," along with an all-new novella, "Boar & Apples." A compilation of a few poems and various retellings of classic fairy tales with a twist; including 'The Little Mermaid', 'Red Riding Hood', and 'Snow White'.
This is my second Kingfisher read and it was quite enjoyable, she really has a knack for retellings. Being able to take the original content and keep it's essence while making it unique in her take on it, there were a few that I almost enjoyed her version of the story over the original and would have read a full, proper novella on.
They are quick, engaging, and some of my favorite versions of retellings I have read. Some quick mentions - 'Peter Pan' has always been dull to me but her horror twist on it actually made the story interesting, the take on 'Snow White' felt very original and uniquely her own, and my favorite might have been the 'Red Riding Hood' story. Easily recommended. ( )

A collection of short stories, mostly fairy tale retellings. This sort of thing is like catnip to me; I love fractured and retold fairy tales, and have since a very young age. I've also liked everything I've read so far of Kingfisher (a.k.a. Ursula Vernon)'s writing. I enjoyed each of these stories in its own way; my favorite may have been "Boar & Apples," or maybe that's just because it's the last, and longest. At any rate, highly recommended if you also enjoy fairy tale retellings. ( )

Where do I worship?
GIVE ME MORE! WHERE DO I THROW MY MONEY?

*cough*
I love this author so much?
And why did I not discover her sooner?
The only hiccup is that I don't really care for poetry.

FINAL VERDICT : READ IT! ( )

Oh, lovely. I like the title story, and "Boar & Apples" - both were excellent. All of them were at least interesting, though I really disliked the Peter Pan one - I was supposed to, it was written very dark. I actually minded the Loathly Lady story less; even darker, but in a different way. And I really liked the Bluebeard story...though I wish she had burned the house as he asked. I do like Ursula's twisted take on things. ( )
