Up until Travis arrived on his doorstep, Charlie had lived a very solitary life. He had surrounded himself with isolation; a couple million acres of red dirt, scorching sun, and loneliness. Six months on, winter has settled over the desert, and Charlie has the life he never dreamed possible. But living and working together, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for six months straight starts to take its toll. Charlie is a stubborn, stubborn man, who tends to have more conversations in his head than what comes out his mouth, whereas Travis has no problem saying what's on his mind. And even as they both struggle to communicate, struggle to make sense of need versus want, Charlie can see that he's pushing Travis away - yet seems helpless to stop it. When it all boils down to whether Travis should stay or go, maybe the decision won't be theirs to make.… (mehr)

Aaaaah, this isn't a bad book by any means. It's just a bit too silly and farcical for my present state of mind. An Australian cowboy farce? - is that the best description for it?

I actually enjoyed what I listened to, and probably the narrator (Joel Leslie) hammed it up a bit too much - or maybe not - maybe he got the best out of it, but I wasn't in the mood for that much frivolity.

I was so keen to read another of NR Walker's books after Private Charter, which was one of my best books for 2022. Yet, among my multiple libraries, this was the only other audiobook I could find of hers despite the fact that she has written 70 or 80? novels!!! Why IS that?

Audible Australia has heaps of her books so I can't believe there aren't any audiobooks in the libraries. ( )

The beauty of these books is that you become a part of Sutton Station family. Every chracter was a main character to me because without Travis, Ma, Trudy or George to name a few, the entire dynamic of the series would be thrown off. When you are three hours from the nearest town, everyone is important. ( )

Matilda the kangaroo was such a cutie patootie!!!

I teared up when Charlie started to beg the lady at the Immigration Office to let Travis stay. I could feel his desperation and it squeezed my heart to the point of pain. Joel Leslie did a great job narrating this part. ( )

This is it. I am done. I am DNF-ing this book and the series.

I can't take any more of Charlie's insecurities and constant pms-ing and mood swings. I can't watch Travis struggle, pulling the weight of their lopsided relationship all by himself and babysitting Charlie and his studies at the same time.

The first books was shiny and new and it did sparkle here and there. Since then the shine wore off and I am stuck trying to claw through the farm's everyday routine and to figure out what's wrong with Charlie where he himself has no frigging clue.

Character-driven plots are not for me, I wish there was a warning in their somewhere, because - the thing with ebooks? - you can't even take them back for a refund.

My rating is for the first 50%. ( )

I'm glad I actually finally sat down to read the next instalment of this series. Of course I revisited book 1 first, but dove straight into this one after. Why did I not read it sooner? That's the question I've been asking myself as well...

As much as i enjoyed Book 1, I loved this one more. I think we get to know the characters a lot better (which, seeing as it's a continuation, I suppose we should expect *grin*). I love way both Travis and Charlie grow. In their relationship, in their live and especially Charlie in being more comfortable about himself.

Perfect? No, there are some things that became a little annoying over time. But that's also what makes this book so great. That through the small irritations, you just can't stop loving the characters and needing to know what they are doing and feeling.

Bring on the next book! ( )
