The later half were junk... like high school essays, with no real editing. ( ) This is a collection of stories by SF and fantasy authors whose work I'm not familiar with. I picked it up while on a search for new (to me) authors. It felt a little odd to have the stories selected over such a wide time range: I think the oldest was written around 1950, and the most recent around 2010. Hence, some of the pieces had dated societal attitudes—it was the sexism that I found most obtrusive—but I wasn't always convinced that the reason was merely the age of the work. None of the stories knocked my socks off with thought-provoking themes, compelling characters or even clever storylines. Speaking generally, I tend to enjoy stories where a character does something and then has to deal with the consequences. In this book, many of the stories were along the lines of "something odd becomes apparent, and then at the end it is explained/sorted out," with the characters really only being there to witness or experience the odd thing or neat idea that the author came up with. That's probably why I also got a strong sense of characters telling each other the plot rather than being more actively involved. That said, I did read all the stories, other than Prisoner of Time by John Russell Fearn. I bailed out on that one around 15% of the way through (essentially because I got bored and it seemed to take up nearly a quarter of the entire book). My favourite stories were probably the ones by Philip E. High: The Drainpipe, The Gunman and The Wishing Stone. They weren't groundbreaking, but there was definitely a feel that the characters had earned their outcomes. Zeige 2 von 2 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
