"Rooted in an authentic historical setting, this thrilling tale of passion and adventure will leave you breathless." -Sabrina Jeffries, NYT bestselling author "A new historical by Judith James is always drop-everything-else-and-devour time for me, and the third entry in her Rakes and Rogues of the Restoration series is no exception. Ms. James never fails to deliver a compelling romance between two complex protagonists wrapped in you-are-there history, a winning combination." HEROES AND HEARTBREAKERS BEST READS 2014 Anna Bowling HOW EASILY ONE'S HEART CAN BE STOLEN... DEPENDS UPON THE THIEF England, 1680 Some call him Gentleman Jack; others know him as Swift Nick. I gotta say I loved the two leads. Jack was a breathtaking heroic figure with a heart of gold. Very much a Robin Hood figure for those who like that. But Bella’s character is the one who stole my heart. I loved her determination to travel and see the world. She was strong where she needed to be and vulnerable at times as well. She was a great mix of both traits that kept her fresh and engaging.
As one can see from the beginning of this review, the light-hearted atmosphere for this novel was very enjoyable to me. I liked being entertained by death-defying escapes over the rooftops of London and starlit rides over the moors of York. There were tons of drama with Bella’s cousin stalking them and the ever present danger of Jack’s ultimate date with a rope. Yet, those elements never overtook the tone of the novel.
I also have to give the author props for her in-depth research. I don’t think the average reader realizes how much she incorporated into this book, historical detail wise, until you read the author’s note. I think that’s the longest one for a romance novel I’ve ever seen. So many aspects of Jack’s and Bella’s characters were taken from real sources, and many of the events portrayed have roots in historical fact as well. Kudos to Judith James for that!
Despite some slides into melodrama assumptions and misunderstandings as a story driver, I definitely enjoyed this novel overall. I appreciated the firm grounding in historical fact and how he author balanced that out with a suspenseful tale of drama and romance on Restoration England’s highways and byways. Definitely a historical romance to check out if you’re looking for a light and enjoyable read! ( )
