Five sex-free dates-how hard can it be? When they were at uni, Owen always had a bit of a crush on Nathan. But Nathan was apparently straight, and Owen was too busy with other guys to take his crush seriously. When Nathan moves back to Bristol after a year away, Owen hears that Nathan has come out of the closet, and he propositions him. Nathan doesn't want to be just another notch on Owen's bedpost, though, so he challenges Owen to prove he can be serious: five dates before they have sex. Owen doesn't think that sounds too difficult. He's expecting Nathan to find his charms irresistible anyway. But as they grow closer, Owen begins to care more about proving himself to Nathan than he does about getting him into bed.… (mehr)

I read The Dating Game, the first book in the series, ‘Owen and Nathan,’ as part of the February Dusty Bookshelf Challenge. The story is told in third person through Owen and Nathan’s eyes.

2.5 Stars

Owen and Nathan both knew each other in college. Owen was a player and he thought Nathan was straight. Unbeknowst to Owen, Nathan was questioning his sexuality and crushing on Owen. After a few years they meet again and once Owen finds out that Nathan is gay, he very much wants to get in his pants. Nathan knows of Owen’s reputation and is not up for it, unless Owen is willing to go on five dates with Nathan on a purely get to know you basis. This is the plot of the story, the five dates.

I found Owen and Nathan difficult to differentiate between the two at times. Maybe it was the way the author phrased the sentences because I kept thinking there was head-hopping going on and I’d have to stop and re-read a few paragraphs to make sure whose pov I was reading. Creating a more distinct voice between characters could be something to work on. There was also a tremendous amount of blushing these two guys did, especially Nathan. You'd think the guys were shy virginal damsels.

When I read the blurb I thought this would be a charming, sexy read, unfortunately it didn’t turn out that way. The writing was telling which made the story flat and boring. I rarely DNF books, but the thought flashed through my mind on this one. The only thing that kept me reading was the short length of the book and it wasn’t filled with loads of other annoying issues enough to compel me to put the book down. There were some spelling issues, and simple grammar mistakes, but I think another go over would likely catch the problems.

The descriptions seemed overdone for simple things like the food, clothes, or what they did. The best way I can explain it would be like if I told you, “I woke at ten o’clock, brushed my teeth with my blue toothbrush and minty toothpaste and finished it off with my favorite citrusy mouth wash.” TMI.

Characters that sounded the same, too much unneeded description, the flat telling and passive writing, and not very interesting dates and no real angst made The Dating Game boring, but I made it through. I can’t give half stars so I’ll raise my rating to 3 Stars only because I'm guessing others would enjoy this story more than I did.
