This book had a lot of potential, but unfortunately I feel like it tried to take on too much at once. Between the various things that Skylar has to learn about and deal with, the many different character dynamics, and the emphasis on all of the different players, I feel like this could have been a more enjoyable read if the author had narrowed the focus down. That said, I didn't hate the book and I might even read on, I just hope that if I do, it delves deeper into a couple of topics instead of trying to take on the world. ( ) Predictable & annoying Did I read the same book as everyone else? It seemed like the main character was determined to always make the worst decision possible in every situation! I also didn't enjoy the writing, which used stilted, formal words where they don't make sense in the scene. Overall, not the book for me. If you feel like reading a paranormal novel with a twist, then “Moon Tortured” is the best choice you could ever make. Werewolves, vampires, witches – McKenzie Hunter’s first book in the “Sky Brooks” series has them all, minus the clichés of the genre. Yes, it is still possible to write paranormal romance without using all the tropes everyone uses, and the author of “Moon Tortured” has just proved it. There is a love triangle, it’s true, but it doesn’t lead where the readers would expect it to lead. Also, this first book in the series does not necessarily deliver a happy ending. In the world McKenzie Hunter has created, this is not so easily achievable, and this is why readers will want to grab the second book as soon as possible. The good news is that “Darkness Unchained” will be available in January 2015, so they won’t have to wait too long to see what their favorite characters are up to next. Skylar has been special ever since she was born. She’s not only a witch, but she is also a werewolf who is forced to turn every full moon. But her abilities are not inherited. Skylar’s mother was a powerful witch, and she chose to sacrifice herself to save her dying unborn child. The ritual allowed a spirit shade to inhabit her child’s body, which explains Skylar’s magical skills and her importance to the vampires’ secret plan. When the dark, bloodthirsty creatures attack her adoptive mother and kill her, Skylar is forced to run away and hide. She is helped by the Midwest pack, but she is not sure she can truly trust the wolves. Soon, Skylar realizes the attack that resulted in her adoptive mother’s death was not a coincidence. The vampires want her because she is the key to their plan of gaining unrestricted power. As if this weren’t enough, she is also hunted by a necromancer and a mercenary. It seems that everyone wants something from her, and if she wants to stay alive, she simply has to rely on the Midwest pack. The fact that she can’t decide between the sexy Josh and his brother, Ethan, makes things even more complicated. The chemistry between the three of them is explosive, but Skylar will eventually have to make a choice. McKenzie Hunter has written a compelling, exciting story that will keep readers glued to the pages. Her characters are complex and believable, and Skylar, especially, is fun, witty, and a strong woman who will not give up easily. She is a survivor, and readers will immediately fall in love with her. Josh and Ethan are the perfect alpha males. Each is interesting and sexy in his own way, and readers will find it difficult to decide which of them is a better choice for the feisty Skylar. “Moon Tortured” is available across all Amazon stores: United States Australia Canada United Kingdom Visit the author’s website to find out more about her upcoming books. Sky Brooks's life started with a death-her own. Sky's spent the first twenty-three years of her life unaware of this, among other things. She always thought she was just a shapeshifter until she wakes up in a strange house in rural Illinois-battered, bruised, and with only vague memories of her mother's death at the hands of vampires. At the request of a powerful witch, Sky is put under the protection of the Midwest Pack. But she isn't sure she can trust them, especially after she meets the dangerously sexy Ethan, a pack member, who's known for being more ruthless than altruistic. After she's attacked by a necromancer, a mercenary, and the vampires who killed her mother, she has no choice but to accept the pack's help. The Midwest Pack aren't quite what they seem-but then again, neither is Sky. As they form an uneasy alliance to search for the reason behind the vampires' vicious attacks, it becomes clear that Sky possesses magic no one has ever seen-and it all started with what happened at her birth.
