Of course I loved this book, it's my favorite genre! Adorable story! ( )

Angus, a brownie, is bound to the McGonagall family by an old curse placed on them by the Queen of Shadows; when Sarah McGonagall dies, Angus must leave Scotland, journeying through the Enchanted Realm to America, where the next girl in the McGonagall line awaits: Alex, a determinedly messy red-headed eleven-year-old middle child. Just as Alex and Angus are getting to know each other and achieve a relatively stable relationship, things in Alex's family begin to fall apart: her father quits his job to write (awful) songs, and her brother quits soccer to focus on his (awful) poetry. It's the curse at work, and the only way to break it is for Angus and one of the McGonagall line to return what was taken from the Queen of Shadows - her daughter, the Princess of Sunshine. But where is she? Closer than they realize...

Full of Scottish lore, told in diary and journal entries as well as emails and texts, and narrated by a full cast, Diary of A Mad Brownie is great fun. ( )

I loved reading this book. The style in which it is written, containing diary entries and newspaper clippings, makes it an easy read. It was tough to only read a quarter of the book each week, I wanted to read the whole thing after the first section. In the story, the main character Alex is visited by a Brownie, Angus. Angus is charged with keeping Alex's room clean as mandated by a curse put on Angus' family. Alex, Angus, and Alex's siblings go on an adventure to Angus' home, the Enchanted Realm, to break the curse and save Alex's brother and father. The lessons I took from this book are that friendships can arise in the most unlikely situations and sometimes you just need to take a few seconds (or thousands) to breathe. ( )

The main lesson learned while reading this book has to do with learning to be yourself and although new things are scary to try they can prove a valuable experience in the long time. Throughout the book the main character experiences a multitude of new things in which he must overcome to remove a curse that was placed upon his family many years ago. ( )

This story follows brownie, Angus Cairns, from Scotland to the Enchanted Realm, to America to fulfill his family's curse. He is assigned to a girl named Alex Carhart, who is not please with his being there. Alex prefers to be messy, and Angus is there to clean up after her. When Angus arrives, problems begin with the men in the Carhart family. Little does Alex know, this is also because of the curse. Over time, Alex and her siblings learn about the curse and decide to attempt to break it with the help of the youngest sibling's teacher. The group go to the Enchanted Realm, break the curse, and return home.

The central message of this story is that friendships can occur from unlikely beginnings. Angus and Alex did not get along whatsoever at the beginning of the story. However, with continued attempts and communication, they become very close friends. ( )
