What happens when you take a heartless prince, a talking horse, a brain-washed princess, and a bunch of fish, and stick them all together in a world of puns? Ridiculousness, that's what. Will the prince manage to rescue the princess? Will he break free from his curse? And most importantly, will there be a happily ever after? Pickles and Ponies is an adult fairy-tale (but not that kind of 'adult' fairy-tale) for the jaded and the young-at-heart alike. I really love Fairy-Tales and modern non-retellings of fairy tales always make me happy. So I really did enjoy this.
The tone that May sets is very cute and like a fairy tale. It's very much a story being told to you and you are very aware and if you like it, you like it. I can understand how this would be a very easy book to hate if you do not like the writing style from the beginning because that's how it continues.
Most of the characters and things are so ridiculous but that's what makes it fun and a fairy tale. It doesn't have to make real world sense because it's so witty and cute that it doesn't matter. I ended up liking all the characters.
It's not your traditional fairy tale either, however. I purposefully goes against many of the traditional fairy tale idea of how princes and princesses should be.
My only problem, and the reason this received only four stars, was that I felt angry with the end of Vanya's story. I didn't think it was very good to leave it as it did. I suppose that may have been with the idea of going against fairy tales but then I think no one should have had a satisfying ending. He seemed to have been punished for something that wasn't his fault and he didn't get his "happy ending." In fact, he got no ending really.
Overall, it was very fun to read though. ( )
