It's a picture book about Bubble Guppies! Sigh - some day my girls will be out of the phase of picking books because they repackage their favorite television characters. In the meantime, this one is bearable, although the story is clearly lifted from an episode of the show, as confirmed by the book credits. Two of the bubble guppies find a spider on their way to school, and discuss its interesting habits, which is quite the coincidence, because when they arrive at school their teacher tells them that they are going to participate in a bug parade. The next few pages describe the floats and bug costumes, but disaster strikes when wind blows (The wind blows? Under water? I love the inconsistencies of shows set under the water.) and knocks a float off course, straight for their new spider friend's web. The bubble guppies manage to save the day using some of their new bug skills. The book does make a point of mentioning that a spider isn't a bug, by the way, but an arachnid. Which still doesn't justify the spider being a central focus of the bug book, but these inconsistencies are not unusual for some forms of children's media. The illustrations appear to be screen shots from the show, which are cute and colorful, and what a child would expect from Bubble Guppies. A nice feature of this book is all its extras - it comes with stickers, a poster, and cards for a matching game. If you don't have the quality, then be sure to load up the special features. I acknowledge that my daughters both really like the book, and were extremely excited about the stickers and match cards. This is marketed to Bubble Guppy fans, and it succeeds in that department. ( )
