What might we dare to expect from an actor's autobiography, even one from a star as personable as George Sanders? In the case of Memoirs of A Professional Cad, we possibly get more than we deserve. George Sanders undoubtedly led a colorful, glamorous, and even action-packed life, spanning the peak years of Hollywood's golden age. But the greatest joy of his memoirs is how funny they are, and how penetrating their author's wit. George's early childhood was spent in Tsarist Russia, before he was obliged to flee with his family to England on the eve of the Russian Revolution. George was eventually asked to leave South America following a duel of honor, and was forced to take up acting for a living. Memoirs of A Professional Cad has much to say about Hollywood and the stars George Sanders worked with and befriended, not to mention the irrepressible Tsa Tsa Gabor who became his wife. But at heart it is less a conventional autobiography, and more a Machiavellian guide to life, and the art of living, from a man who knew a thing or two on the subject. Memoirs of A Professional Cad stands today as one of the classic Hollywood memoirs, from one of its most original, enduring, and inimitable stars.… (mehr)

Well written autobiography by actor George Sanders who normally played a cynic or cad in films such as All About Eve, Rebecca, Ivanhoe, and so many others. He maintains his cynical attitude in his writing with stories such as he got rid of his house as having it meant he had to entertain people. His views on woman and marriage match the attitudes he portrayed in many films. The most interesting portions were his reminiscences of working with Tyrone Power on Power's last film, Solomon and Sheba, and Power's tragic death and funeral, as well as his portrayal of wife Zsa Zsa Gabor always being under a hair dryer. His thoughts on the overpopulation of the earth are interesting. This is a man who committed suicide because he was "bored" and the book seems to reflect his attitude of not being excited about anything. A way to get some insight into this great character actor. This book should be compulsory reading in schools (possible A level syllabus?). The incredibly witty and enigmatic George Sanders' distinctive voice can almost be heard whilst turning the pages. An absolute, quintessential MUST-read. ( )

George Sanders, better known as an actor, but what a talented writer! “Irony is just honesty with the volume cranked up.” You get the caddishness here of Homeric proportions. ( )

Readable biography of an actor of Hungarian origin who became the epitome of the suave British villain. He was also Leslie Charteris' "the Saint" in the 1950's movies. Not Roger Moore, and certainly not Val Kilmer's Saint! ( )

This book perfectly captures the incomparable character-actor whom we have savoured insuch diverse (and occasional perverse) flicks as FOREVER AMBER, THE GHOST AND MRS MUIR, and VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED. He completed exactly one hundred films, mostly as a super-slick masher. How ironic that his last role should be a drag-act. Anyway, his life was goofy, perhaps inevitably so. Read about his Uncle Jack shooting flies off the ceiling and contemplate the mysterious ways of genetics. ( )

This book is affectionately dedicated to my father, who is the source of my past experience, and to Benita, who is the sauce of my present laughter. G.S.

On July 3, 1906, the world was at peace. Nothing of any consequence seemed to be happening in the capital cities of any of its countries. Nothing disturbed the summer lethargy of its population. Everywhere people dozed contentedly, unaware that an event of major importance was taking place in St. Petersburg, Russia. At number 6 Petroffski Ostroff, to Margaret and Henry Sanders, a son of dazzling beauty and infinite charm was being born. It was I.
