Braking for Bodies is filled with humor and the mystery is laced with first-rate misdirection. A generous helping of the book's humor centers on the esprit de corps of the inhabitants of Mackinac Island. Tourism is their livelihood, and they go out of their way to hide any sort of bad news from money-wielding visitors. When some of those tourists think Peephole Perry's death is part of a grander scheme for their entertainment, the townfolk use that to their advantage, as they also do their knowledge of the island to help Fiona as much as they can. Evie Bloomfield is a junk food-eating amateur sleuth who is an artistic genius with paint, brush, and bicycles. (How about renting the "Nancy Drew," the "Downton Abbey," or the "My Little Pony"?) Away from paint and bikes, it does take her a while to figure out to where all her clean clothes are disappearing. I enjoy the entire cast of characters, although I have to be honest and admit that Irish Donna's brogue sounds completely phony. Since she doesn't have a big share of the action, I can deal with it, but I do wish she'd be struck with some strange type of linguistic amnesia and start talking like normal folks. If you're in the mood for a light-hearted mystery in the near-perfect setting of no-combustion-engines-allowed Mackinac Island in Michigan, I'd suggest you pick up Duffy Brown's Cycle Path mysteries. In Braking for Bodies Duffy Brown brings us back to Mackinac Island with a group of delightful characters, some old some new, during the Lilac Festival. The story zips right along with laugh out loud antics and observations keeping the reader turning the pages to find out what happens next. A unique murder weapon, a roving wedding dress, and an unexpected ride with Shakespeare keeps this story hopping. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to spend a light and breezy afternoon or two whiling away the hours with an enchanting mystery. Braking For Bodies is the second book the A Cycle Path Mystery series. Evie has recently moved to Mackinac Island to help out at Rudy's Rides, a bicycle rental store, while Rudy recovers from a broken leg and soon becomes part owner in the store. Rudy will soon be married to Irma Sutter and Evie has gone to the dock to await the ferry that will be bringing Irma wedding dress. Also waiting at the dock is Fiona, editor and reporter for the Town Crier the island's newspaper. She is awaiting the arrival of her former boss, Peepster Perry, editor the sleazy tell all rag the Inside Scoop. As it turns out the dress that Evie was given is the wrong one and is for Idle Summers, as she is bicycling to the Grand Hotel to switch dresses with Summers, she literally runs into Perry on the path. It is first thought that he might have fallen from the hotel, but the finding of a blow to the back of his head makes Chief Nate Sutter otherwise. Rumors persist that Perry has been using information that he finds for his rag, he has also been using to blackmail people. Since he has come to the Island to visit with Fiona, she immediately becomes a person of interest. It doesn't help Fiona position when she goes into hiding while she tries to find out did kill him. In addition, Fiona ask Evie for help in uncovering the killer. Also among the suspects are his mistress, Zo, his wife, Madonna, and Penelope the desk clerk at the hotel. Evie enlists the help of her lawyer mother, Carmen, in her sleuthing This series has a cast of engaging and believable characters who will provide you with chuckles and cause to you to shake your heads at. Looking forward to the next adventures on Mackinac Island. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

This series is laugh-out-loud funny. Not only is the wedding going downhill but a bunch of murder mystery fans think this is a week-end of murder games with a free weekend at the Grand Hotel for solving the murder. They are a riot and Nate's patience is running out fast. I love this group of people and look forward to the third book. ( )
