Britta of Del wants nothing less than to be the new Apprentice Trader of the Rosalyn fleet. Family and friends and even the terrible secret of her parentage will not stop her. But how can she succeed when her true identity must surely be guessed by Trader Mab, who knew her father, and the crew of the Star of Deltora? Relying on no more than her wits and the kind acts of friends she makes along the way, Britta is drawn closer and closer to her terrible destiny.
Britta has always wanted to be a trader like her father, sailing the nine seas and bringing precious cargo home to Del harbour. Her dreams seemed safe until her fathers quest to find the fabled Staff of Tier ended in blood and horror. Now his shamed family is in hiding, and his ship, the Star of Deltora, belongs to the powerful Rosalyn fleet. But Brittas ambition burns as fiercely as ever. When she suddenly gets the chance to win back her future she knows she has to take it whatever the cost. She has no idea that shadows from a distant, haunted isle are watching her every move. I was expecting slightly more from a CBCA Honours book, but it’s a solid beginning to a story about a teenage girl on a journey with other girls. I’m hopeful, judging from this book, that some of them will become friends and not just rivals.
There’s also something rather satisfying about the cover, which features a sailing ship on an ocean and a girl with curly, windblown hair. The Deltora Quest books (which I read as a teenager) all had monsters on their covers, whereas this looks designed to be pretty and to appeal to girls.
Q ~ Why do you wish to be the Trader Rosalyn’s Apprentice?
Why? Britta thought, her cheeks burning. Because trading is in my blood. Because I lost by birthright through no fault of my own. Because the Star of Deltora once belonged to be my family and this is my only chance to get her back.
She could write none of this, of course, for fear of revealing who she was. And to write down the other things that sprang to mind -- that she was stifled at home, that she longed to sail the wide seas and see new, interesting people and places, would impress no one. ( )
