The Only Answer begins a couple hours before where The Only Exception’s epilogue left off. Newly engaged, Trey and Monica are beginning their post-college lives while dealing with the media storm of Trey’s father’s presidential campaign. A moment of mindless bliss has altered the couple’s–and their families’–plans.
I adored Trey in The Only Exception and he has continued to be one of my top book boyfriends. He hasn’t let the years or outside pressures change him, or his devotion to Monica. He still has his ‘people pleaser’ personality, but he does have his moments of letting go. Monica continues to be a snarky (in a good way) liberal, and I love her character. I have a lot of the same beliefs and attitude as her, making it so easy to relate.
The storyline was an emotional roller coaster, but in a realist way. Not every real relationship is lovey-dovey 24/7, so the portrayal in The Only Answer felt true to life. The internal conflicts came across as thoughts the average person in that situation would be having, not something overly hyped. The book does a great job at showing what happens after the honeymoon phase wears off and real life begins.
I enjoyed seeing Valerie, Melanie’s sister, around. As I said before, I did not read the Forever Wild serial, so I was a little surprised and curious by the big changes in her life. While they didn’t alter my opinion of the book, I do wish I had known in advance because certain things were mentioned and I found myself more curious about her than Monica in those scenes.
The Only Answer left me satisfied for my favorite couple. I’ll miss Trey and Monica, but hopefully Trey’s brother will get a book and we’ll be seeing them again. I rate this book 4/5 stars. ( )
