( ) Sarah is a writer rather than a cookery writer and some of the recipes in this book include such horrors (sorry - I am a baking snob) as cake mix and whipped topping. Other recipes are fine or give good ideas of an item where a better recipe might be located elsewhere. The strength of the book are the inspirational suggestions of books to read under monthly themes, the food being listed as ideas to accompany. I really did think, at regular intervals - I must read that! So the book succeeds in its goal. For 'A Tree Grows in Brooklyn' there is an appropriately frugal Beef Barley Soup; for Homer's 'Odyssey' - Greek Salad and for 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn' a catfish recipe. A must-have for reading groups whose members love Jacqueline Susann as much as John Steinbeck and Cosmopolitans as much as chamomile tea. Read It and Eatis a hip, witty, and occasionally irreverent guide to creating book club get-togethers with flair, sparkle, and delicious food and drink based on Gardner's popular newsletter, The Literary Gathering. Appealing to the nearly 10 million book club members nationwide, Read It and Eatfeatures fiction and nonfiction reading selections ranging from timeless classics to irresistible beach reads, and recipes for easy-to-prepare (and easy-to-transport!) cocktails, finger foods, sit-down dinners, and satisfying snacks, from Confessions of a Shopaholic's Cut-Back Shrimp Curry and The Tortilla Curtain's Mint-Garnished Mojitos, to Gone With the Wind's Georgia Peach Bread and Horse Heaven's Champagne Juleps. Organized by month, each chapter highlights a different theme (i.e., January: Change Your World; February: Be My Valentine) and contains an introduction to the theme and reading selections; engaging, thought-provoking discussion points; and recipes inspired by the readings. As fun to read as it is to use, Read It and Eatpromises to be the strappy high-heeled sandal in the book club world of loafers and Birkenstocks. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
