A history of the American Revolutionary War, focused on troops from Maryland. Maryland troops saved Washington’s army at the Battle of Brooklyn, holding off the British long enough for the rest of the Continental Army to retreat across the East River. (According to legend, the Maryland dead were buried in a mass grave somewhere in Brooklyn, but archaeological digs have failed to find any evidence. There’s a plaque on an American Legion hall and a monument in Prospect Park). The reconstituted 1st Maryland fought at most of the important battles – Trenton, Cowpens, Guilford Courthouse – and author Patrick O’Donnell ends up producing an interesting history of the entire war (because he has to fill in the gaps where the 1st Maryland wasn’t involved). George Washington’s praise of the Marylanders led to one of the State’s nicknames, “The Old Line State”, since the 1st Maryland was a “line” regiment in the Continental Army as opposed to a militia unit.
Covers the same ground as a lot of other Revolutionary War histories but well written enough to stay interesting. Excellent maps of both tactical battles and strategic campaigns. I'm not typically one for military histories, but this book managed to hold my attention and offer plenty of nuggets of information of which I was previously unaware. This history follows the men of a Maryland unit throughout the American Revolutionary War, as they serve and experienced nearly all of the significant battles in that war. As such, this book can also be read as a kind of military history of the Revolutionary War and the author does an excellent job of bringing in other groups and historical figures as they intersect with the main story. A couple of things shared in this book, such as the story of the Stockbridge Mohicans, were unknown to me and completely fascinating. I appreciated the author's ability to create a concise, yet detailed account of the Revolutionary War and would recommend this book to anyone interested in the time period. ( )

Excellent history of a relatively unknown unit. The Marylanders played a pivotal role in our independence. My only real critique of this book is the authors love of the word intrepid. He used intrepid more than I have ever heard that word used in my life. It became obnoxious after a while. I would still highly recommend this book. ( )
