Hmm... This book reminds me of Chex mix. You like the majority of the bag but the nasty crackers seem plentiful.

There are some really interesting parts, good bits of detail, and some nice plot-twists in the narrative but the second half of the story became confusing and dragged a bit.

I enjoyed Silas a lot *virtual thumbs-up* On the other hand, Errin was boring. I think she acts like the average human being would in her position, but she just didn't have any gripping/amazing moments.

[Now, I've haven't read the 1st book and have no desire to do so, but I'm interested in reading the third book though. With no previous knowledge, I was able to follow along in the story well.]

The cover beautifully follows the first book which is great as they bound together.
Unfortunately I cant say the same about the book, as much as I loved the first part, this second part wasn't so amazing and lacked the interesting characters and events just didn't seem SO bright to fully believe their actions, I wanted more depth, I wanted the same mode as was on the first book.
Still, having said that, it was a good read and I am, I am looking for the very final part of the trilogy. ( )

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales

Quick & Dirty: Compelling high fantasy full of adventure, romance, and suspense! I loved the first book in the series, but I may have loved this one even more! If you are a young adult fantasy fan you need to read this series!

Opening Sentence: The night guard on the East Gate reached to scratch the sudden sharp itch at his throat.

The Review:

Everyone always thought that the stories of the Sleeping Prince was a nightmare told to children but it turns out it’s not a story at all, but actual history! Now that he has awoken and taken over the kingdom of Lormere every other kingdom is waiting to see who he will attack next!

Errin lives in the kingdom of Tregellan and the last few years have been tough for her and her family. When her father died in a terrible accident her family was forced to leave their home. Her older brother Lief left to try to make some money to help support them and Errin has had to care for her ill mother all on her own. She hasn’t heard from her brother in quite some time and to make ends meet she has to sell illegal herbal tonics. She is barely scraping by when it is announced that her village is to be evacuated to make room for the army fighting the terrifying Sleeping Prince.

Now she is broke, homeless and the only person she can turn to for help is the mysterious young man that has been buying her illegal herbal potions! He promises to help her and her mother get to safety, but when he disappears Errin is left to fend for herself. To save her family she must find the girl the Sleeping Prince is looking for and get her to safety before it’s too late.

Errin was such an amazing heroine! She is smart, passionate, resourceful, and brave. Along with all her great qualities she also tended to be a little rash at times and she had a lot of insecurities, but all of her flaws made her feel more realistic! She goes through so much along her journey and she showed a lot of growth! I loved how much she cared about her family and even though it was hard to take care of her sick mother she never even considered any other option. Her determination was amazing and I really admired her. I felt like she was such a well rounded character and it made it easy to love her!

I fell head over heels for Silas right away and the more I got to know him, the more I loved him. He is charming, sweet, and totally gorgeous! For a large part of the book his storyline was very mysterious and I liked how the author slowly revealed bits and pieces about him. His relationship with Errin was very slow burning, but they had great chemistry. With the way the book ended I am very interested to see what happens with Silas in the next book!

The Sleeping Prince is a wonderful fantasy full of adventure and romance. I really enjoyed The Sin Eaters Daughter, but surprisingly I liked this one even more. Both books contain a great imaginative setting and intriguing plots, but I connected with the characters a little bit more in The Sleeping Prince. Salisbury did such a wonderful job tying the two books together and I really loved how she answered some of my questions from the first book without being spoilery. In all honesty, you could probably read this without reading the first book, but I would highly recommend reading them in order so you get the full effect of the story. Generally, I struggle when a series changes POV, but it really worked for this book. The new POV made the story feel familiar yet fresh and new at the same time. Salisbury has beautiful writing and she really knows how to captivate her readers! I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. If you are a high fantasy fan you must pick up this series ASAP!

Notable Scene:

But I’ve discovered that you can learn a lot without words. And what I’ve learned is hard won, because—though he’s the closest thing I have to a friend here, and as far as I know, I’m his—I’ve never seen his whole face. It sounds impossible. It ought to be; how can you call someone a friend, know them for so long, and not know what they look like? Yet I don’t. I don’t know what color his eyes are or his hair. I know his mouth, and the point of his chin, and his neat teeth. Once I even saw the end of his nose when he tipped his head back to laugh. But that’s all. From our first meeting, to today, he has always, always been hooded, gloved, and cloaked and he’s never removed them, never even pushed them aside, whether we’re indoors or out. When I asked him why, he told me it was safer like that. For us both. And not to ask again.

Mysterious boys are not as enjoyable in reality as they are in stories.

FTC Advisory: Scholastic provided me with a copy of The Sleeping Prince. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review. ( )
