( ) This novel was inspired by Giono's experiences during WWI and forms part of his pacifist writings. It has a propagandistic feel to it and I didn't get very attached to any of the characters. Nevertheless, there are some of the most visceral descriptions of trench warfare that I have ever read. I'm reading this in the context of a course on the novel as social critique so I definitely got a lot of out of it. I think that people interested in this period would definitely find the novel interesting. Zeige 2 von 2 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

Written in chilling detail, this novel describes the effect of World War I on a small community in Provence. In some of the most fiercely realistic and horrifying scenes of war ever recreated in literature, this story evokes the harsh, primitive conditions in the trenches as well as the loneliness and anxiety experienced by those left at home. The gradual disintegration of normal life and morals in areas far from the fighting grimly parallels the wholesale destruction of men, land, and animals at the front.
