Sarah Hilary won the 2015 Theakston's Crime Novel of the Year with her debut, the 2014 Richard and Judy pick. She followed up with NO OTHER DARKNESS, proclaimed as 'riveting' by Lisa Gardner, 'utterly gripping' by Eva Dolan and 'truly mesmerising' by David Mark. Now D.I. Marnie Rome returns in her third novel. You'll never be out of Harm's way The young girl who causes the fatal car crash disappears from the scene. I found this gripping while I was reading it, if slightly longer than it needed to be. Now that I have put it down, I am questioning how convincing I find certain aspects of the plot. There are also some logistical questions which I don't think were addressed. Still, it was a page turner and featured police officers working together collaboratively while leading functional personal lives, which is always refreshing. ( )

‘Tell me why.’ Her voice was freighted by calm, holding him here, making him respect the crime scene despite its smell, its meanness, its futility.

⭐⭐⭐ = I liked it.

One thing about this series that's very interesting is the heavy emphasis on victims — in all their forms.

While I did have an idea as for the killer's reveal, I still found the execution and plot well fabricated. Though I'm a little disappointed in how the police always manage to lose track of a person of interest or two ( )

The third novel featuring DI Marney Rome and DS Noah Jake finds them leading an investigation into the disappearance of a fifteen year old girl, May Beswick. In a tense and chilling story, Hilary reveals breakdowns of relationships within families as the police link May’s disappearance with that of other young girls and eventually they come to the conclusion that one man is responsible for these events. Lack of communication has eroded the trust of adults by many of the youngsters at risk, a lack that also extends to their dealings with the police, which hampers their efforts to solve the case. With Hilary’s perceptive writing increasing the fear throughout the book, it makes for an enthralling and terrifying tale.

This is DI Marnie Rome’s third outing but new readers will have no trouble jumping straight into the action, starting with a bad car accident caused by a semi-nude girl jaywalking on a busy road.

Marnie and her attractive gay sidekick Noah investigate the dodgy tower blocks of London, trying to find the young jaywalker and a host of other missing teenage girls. They realise the girls are being taken in by someone, who’s killing them.

Equal parts thriller, police procedural, thriller and contemporary social commentary, the story has a satisfy conclusion – but with an intriguing teaser to keep the reader coming back for more. ( )

A young girl runs out into the road, a car swerves to avoid her and crashes into another vehicle. Later a girl is found in Battersea Power Station, she's been missing for months but only recently killed and has been looked after. A day later another body is found, this time she is dumped in the trash around a council tower block. The two are linked - but how?

I hadn't read the first two Marnie Rome novels so came to this one with fresh eyes. The story is very clever with enough twists and turns to really engage. What I also liked was the fact that although there is an established team of investigators, they aren't really made the focus. There is little back-story but clear character development and it doesn't feel as though one must have read the previous two books in order to really get into this story. The juxtaposition between the luxury developments and the council estates, the middle class and the homeless, are beautifully described but develop in a natural way as part of the plot.
