Fans of the pillsbury doughboy, ghostbusters, or extremely religious persons with no sense of humor may wish to avoid this volume of the series. The scene where Randy summons Christ to defend the city is sure to offend Christian Fundamentalists. I wonder if this might be authors reaction to the fundamentalists who ranted against D&D, much like this quote from IO9

It was never a fair fight between fundamentalist Christianity and D&D. One was a dangerous system full of dark mysticism and threats to warp a young mind beyond repair, and the other was a tabletop RPG.

I'm sure I'll read volume 5 when the author gets around to writing it, I wouldn't mind if he wants to cut back a bit on the toilet humor, after a while it's really not that funny anymore. ( )

This will never end. The writing is about the same as in the fist one and the jokes start to repeat (how many times will the characters fear being raped by a dude?). The crew is growing more bizarre with each book but honestly, I was hoping the child rapist and gay hick weren't going to stay for the next book but here they are, as main characters no less. It just went too wacky. ( )

Reviewing these books is hard. Mainly because it's like telling someone about what is going on in your DnD campaign and you see their eyes gloss over because it's 90% "you had to be there to see why this is funny". But in terms of the series... filled with crude humor, wide variety of characters, and twists that are both unexpected and pretty funny.

I only recommend this to people who like crude humor that is what you would hear late night in a college common room and/or DnD fantasy. ( )

Critical Failures IV (Caverns and Creatures #4) by Robert Bevan is not like the previous hilarious books. This fell so short of the others. It has a few giggle moments but really... I laughed my ass off on all the others and this was just meh... What was with Tim? Same sort of jokes but flat...I bought CC5, hope Bevan is out of his slump because I have all his other books and this is the only one I found disappointing. 2 1/2 stars rounding up to 3. ( )
