Excellent social history, starting from the thrilling creation of a new medium (animated films and cartoons) and how Walt Disney's passion for this work led him to create The Magic Kingdom/ Disneyland parks. This, unfortunately eventually went to his head (with the Epcot Center originitially envisioned as a claustrophobic, 24-hour living experience). The early, hungry days--with the greatly talented staff Disney was able to gather around him--are delightful. The later story becomes less interesting, although the social history underling it is continually well-written and was significant to American mass culture. There are other industries that fed into mass cultural in this country as well, but this book wisely keeps to its topic. ( ) keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
The Magic Kingdom sheds new light on the cultural icon of "Uncle Walt." Watts digs deeply into Disney's private life, investigating his roles as husband, father, and brother and providing fresh insight into his peculiar psyche-his genuine folksiness and warmth, his domineering treatment of colleagues and friends, his deepest prejudices and passions. Full of colorful sketches of daily life at the Disney Studio and tales about the creation of Disneyland and Disney World, The Magic Kingdom offers a definitive view of one of the most influential Americans of the twentieth century.
