The lightkeeper by Susan Wiggs
Starts out in 1886, Jessie Morgan is the lightkeeper and he feels a disturbance in the air and then notices something has washed up on the shore.
He then notices it's a female body, a pregnant one and the town soon learns of her living there as the doctor has been to visit. They figure out where she came from and help her recuperate.
We also learn of Jessie's past, his two best friends Emily and Granger and how things change forever one night...
Love hearing of the mermaid quilt and apples-we've always loved the huge apple when in WA.
Liked learning what hsi job is at the light house. I recall visiting the area ourselves and enjoyed the day. They do come together and with fears her married man will come for the child Jessie marries her.
One woman with many children comes with others from town to congratulate them and Mary has an idea of how she can remain in town and make money to survive on....
Mary tells him the man's name of the babys father and it sends Jessie into a deep dark world. He will get revenge on Granger this time, who's now married to his sister and she's miserable...
Sex scenes as they draw closer to one another and just want to survive the winter long months.
Granger appears to his wife who's at the cottage with Mary and David and they all leave together...Jessie can follow what happened with Anna's scent of gardenias and he gets in the boat to take care of them all. he can make it happen as the gale gets stronger and the light is out...

The Lightkeeper by Susan Wiggs
Fantastic story about a man Jesse Morgan who operates the light house at Cape Disappointment. It's a tricky section of the coast in the northwest.
He has already lost his wife and their unborn son and is a hermit, keeping to himself until one day he rescues a pregnant woman and tends to her health.
Over the months he learns about her Irish upbringing and who the father is. She learns his secrets as well. He births the child and she says it's their son.
When he returns one day after chores and finds that his sister in law has been to the cottage and now everybody is gone. He tracks Mary and her son David to the vessel that the coast guard had not even sanctioned seaworthy.
His sister in law and her husband Granger-the boy's bio father are in the vessel as well and he knows what he has to do to safe the women and child. He vowed never to turn the light off at the lighthouse...
Loved hearing the story of how in the 1850's they would use horses and stallions to rescue people on the shores. Loved the ending and learning about antique light floats.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device). ( )

An unconscious pregnant woman is washed up on the beach, and the lightkeeper grudgingly nurses her back to health, still grieving over his wife who drowned at sea.
Strong characters and their emotions make this a powerful read, and I was sucked into this very atmospheric book. Mary was a spirited Irish lass, and Jesse was a tortured soul who still blamed himself for his wife's death.
At times, though, I felt I was reading a contemporary story more than a historical one. as a lot of the written speech was very modern.
