The longer I think about this book, the angrier I get. The first page of this tale is written in present tense, which is unusual for a children's book so it caught my attention. Then, inexplicably, when I turned the page I was transported to the past via verb conjugation but it looked just like the present. This. Is. Not. Allowed. There are Rules! Conventions! Children do not need to be given books that will confuse their ability to properly conjugate, especially given the number of irregular verbs the English language is blessed with.

The story and illustrations are perfectly cute but the writing is sloppy and awkward and I would cringe if I ever tried to read it to a child.

I was sent this book by the publisher in exchange for my brutally honest review. ( )

i have just read this book with my 7 years old son, the book is wonderful and very simple... my son could read it easily and said it was funny and the two friends, the goat and the tortoise were smart.....he said that the story was too short!! we will look for other coming volumes- ( )

My son is 8 and he loved this story. It was a quick read and he has read it many times now. It is a medley of classic tales around our two main characters. Perfect for young readers. ( )

What a fun read! I loved the behhhing goat named Gertrude and the wise old tortoise named Toby. There are references to the stories "Little Red Riding Hood", "The Frog Prince", "Snow White", "Jack and the Beanstalk" and "The Gingerbread Man". Gertrude and Toby's Friday Adventure is a great stand-alone story even if a child doesn't have knowledge of the other fairy tales.

Since reading this book, I have found that Shari Tharp has also published Gertrude and Toby Save the Gingerbread Man and Gertrude and Toby Meet the Wolf. I plan to buy all three from Amazon and have them sent to my grand-kids. I am disappointed that I can't find the books to order from Follett. I would love to purchase all three in hardbound for some of my library customers at school. I will keep checking back and hope that they become available.

Jim Heath has created comical and colorful illustrations that add humor to this story. Shari Tharp has created a rollicking adventure. I think kids will love it. ( )

First of all, I love the illustrations. They are simple and clean, yet pair with the text beautifully. I am equally pleased with the rest of the book as well. This Gertrude and Toby story is the first installment of the series and introduces the two protagonists. The story is straightforward and unique - this is not just another fairy-tale riff. Readers will become engaged with the adorable, titular pair and will enjoy meeting familiar storybook characters along the way! Recommended for Pre-K to Second Grades.

Adorable illustrations. I loved the detail paid to creating a sense of texture in many of the images, providing so much depth and whimsy. Their journey is described logically and engagingly, evoking a sense of excitement for the characters we know and like early on, thanks to the smart descriptions and fabulous dialogue. Settings stand out especially well; author has a great talent for bringing settings to life, and the popping up of fairy tale characters was amusing and enjoyable, good touchstones to advance the reader through the book. Very imaginative and fun, and I could tell that the author loved writing those scenes. A sort of sparkle exists there. I'm impressed by the author's stellar structuring of the book, crisp cadence, and wonderful characterization throughout. The story is fresh and fun, Gertrude and Toby are characters I'd definitely look for in additional books to a series, which I thought early in reading this book, and then delighted at finding out about Book 2. One of the details that impressed me so much here is the sense of movement in scenes, excitement with the right touch of potential danger to draw the reader in. Age-appropriate language completes the terrific detailing of this book. Very well done. A true standout, encouraging the reader to hope for another adventure from this author/illustrator pair. --Judge, 24th Annual Writer's Digest Self-Published Book Awards, December 2016

All the more impressive as "Gertrude and Toby's Friday Adventure" is Shari Tharp's debut as a children's picture book author. This delightful and entertaining volume is Book 1 in the Gertrude and Toby fairy tale adventure book series and will leave its young readers ages 6 to 9 looking eagerly toward the next installment of the daring duo's adventures. While very highly recommended for elementary school and community library collections, it should be noted for personal reading lists that "Gertrude and Toby's Friday Adventure" is also available in a paperback edition (9780996967914, $8.09) and in a Kindle format ($4.99).
