This is an interesting story that slowly revealed its truths. I found the style a little difficult to adjust to initially, but it gives the novella an individual feel and emphasizes the confusion of the main character. ( )

Weird and lovely story. Some great concepts here - and great characters to embody them. The unnamed woman is fascinating, and what she eventually learns about herself is more so. I'm glad there's a sequel. It's written in...hmmm, third person? Close omniscient? Present tense, which is a little weird (she does this, he says that, though we do get to see inside her head and no one else's). Definitely worth reading, and I've cued up the second book for tomorrow. ( )

I really enjoyed this story. I was a little confused at first at what was going on, but I soon caught on, and also re read the synopsis to familiarize myself and orient myself.

I really enjoyed the main character, and her journey through this story. It was interesting to see how she dealt with the challenges presented to her. The setting was also really cool - an island that changes the terrain to challenge you. I found the world building a little lacking - mostly because the MC didn't actually really know what was going on either, so hopefully in the next instalments we get some more backstory.

I did enjoy the writing, like I always do from Marie Brennan. She sucked me in and created this tiny world for me to explore. Can't wait to read more from this series! ( )

A glimpse into an interesting, quasi modern world with avatars/archons, compulsions, and magic that does seem magical. Not even novella length. ( )
