Easy listening crime novel, however did not enjoy the narration. Characters’ voices grated on me. ( )

Nikki is not pleasant to be around. She's bigoted and narrow-minded and must have to go to the gym all the time to carry around that chip on her shoulder. I don't know if I'll even get through one book, never mind the rest of the series.

So I got to the end and well...I'm not sure. Nikki got her head (somewhat) out of her ass in the end, but her epiphany about what was really going on was a bit much considering she's not really such a great cop. More like a bully with an agenda. I liked Joe, but not enough to keep going with this I think. We'll see. ( )

This is the first of series featuring DI Nikki Galena who has a penchant for going after drug dealers and distributors. She's single with a daughter in a persistent vegetative state as a result of drug overdose. Her colleagues prefer not to work with her because of her hard driving behavior, but DS Joseph Easter has arrived from another station and is assigned to her.
Their case involves gang behavior, wearing hideous identical masks when they commit crimes, mostly assault. Which turns out to be a distraction from their bigger crimes. ( )

Molto bello, un thriller intrigante e avvincete che ci fa conoscere una nuova coppia di investigatori molto particolari, entrambi con un passato pesante e difficile alle spalle che tuttora li condizione nei loro rapporti con gli altri.
La scomparsa a pochi giorni di distanza di due giovani e bellissime ragazze e la caccia a una banda di balordi mascherati che terrorizza la città sono le indagini che vedono all’opera per la prima volta insieme Nikki Galena, un’ottima detective dal carattere molto particolare che preferisce lavorare da sola secondo le sue personali regole, e Joseph Easter, il nuovo acquisto della Centrale, appena arrivato ma che si porta dietro una pessima reputazione.
Vicende apparentemente slegate tra loro ma che presenteranno risvolti inaspettati e del tutto imprevedibili e che metteranno a dura prova tutta la squadra che, alla fine, scoprirà di essere molto più legata di quanto fosse evidente.
Nota negativa che, comunque, non pregiudica il mio giudizio sul libro: il titolo dato in italiano dalla casa editrice risulta del tutto incomprensibile in quanto non c’entra nulla né con la storia né con quello originale (Crime on the fens), un’altra delle tante “stranezze” (per non dire di peggio) della Newton che di certo non ha fatto della qualità una sua prerogativa, tanto che mi chiedo se avremo mai la possibilità di poter leggere di questa serie anche i 10 titoli già usciti in lingua originale.
A me piacerebbe poterlo fare perché questo primo libro mi fa ben sperare in altre belle avventure.

We are introduced to DI Nikki Galena, a detective tough on the drug dealers in her area, and herself and her team. Resulting in no-one wanting to work with her until she has to accept DS Joseph Easter.
What starts off with gangs committing crimes wearing identical hideous masks, leads to the disappearance of two teenagers. Unfortunately the past is ready to catch up on Galena.
A good start to a new detective series, with a range of characters. ( )
