Alex, the main character, while sometimes irritating, is a relatable character- she worries about money, has panic attacks, stresses about her future, is passionate about fandoms, and loves her friends.
I thought Middleton did a good job with talking about anxiety and panic attacks. Alex suffers from these, and it takes a lot of work for her to get through them. It was nice to see such supporting and understanding friends, Lucy and Freddie, who were able to help her written into Alex's life. Lucy was probably my favorite character!
The biggest problem I had with this book was that there was a lot of slut shaming. Every female in the book who wasn't obsessed with Sherlock Holmes or didn't wear t-shirts and jeans was portrayed in a less than lovable manner. The girls who loved expensive clothes, had bigger breasts, or dressed in a revealing manner were all called "sluts", "slags", "nightmarish", or another similar derogatory term. In that sense, it felt very much like a dated cheesy teen movie where the "Nerd Girls" were harassed by the "Popular Cheerleader/Pretty Girl" archetype.
There were also some weird transitions. One scene would end abruptly and then the next scene would be set a month later, and begin with a roundup of everything Alex had done in that time.
I'm interested to see what Middleton does in her writing next! Hopefully there are far fewer "mean girl vs nice girl" tropes- Middleton has a solid style and I'd like to see more! ( )
