Why Was Lincoln Murdered? by Otto Eisenschiml (read 19 Dec 1945) From my diary entry for Dec 14, 1945: " I started tonight Why Was Lincoln Murdered? and the narrative ia as intriguing as the title. Lincoln and his death are an interesting and mysterious subject." My entry for Dec 16, 1945: "Reading in Why Was Lincoln Murdered? which is intriguing. The author is interpreting history in a way I never heard before. The questions he raises are interesting." On Dec 17 my entry is: "Finished Lincoln death book except for supplementary notes. After sort of accusing Secretary of War Stanton all through the book of connection in Lincoln's murder at the end the author says nothing can be proved--facts are needed." My entry on Dec 19, 1945: "Finished the Lincoln book and packed it up to return to the Iowa Traveling Library." I read the book over 65 years ago and still remember how astounded I was at what the author implied. Now, apparently the hypothesis he put forth is pretty well poopooed by reliable historians but it did shake me up back there in 1945, when I was a senior in high school. ( )
Pro: Each chapter in the book presents its own particular story, and when the reader has finished this fine volume, not much doubt is left in his mind as to who would have profited most and who would have wanted Abraham Lincoln removed from the picture. Reviewed by King Hostick Con: The recent book...has met with a cross-current of criticism among the various magazine and newspaper book reviewers. A New York reviewer said it was a book that never should have been written. Another commented that it was a nightmare of conjecture principally based on an indictment of Stanton for complicity in the murder, two generations after Stanton died, so that neither he nor his intimate friends were given a chance to defend themselves. "Why Was Lincoln Murdered?" is a 1937 work by Otto Eisenschiml. Otto Eisenschiml (1880 - 1963) was an Austrian-born chemist. He became an executive in the American oil industry, as well as controversial author. He is perhaps most famous for writing this book, within which he proposes that Abraham Lincoln's assassination was in fact the result of a plot by a senior member of his Cabinet. "Why Was Lincoln Murdered?" is highly recommended for those with an interest in the assassination of Lincoln and the political life of this great statesman. Other notable works by this author include: "The Shadow of Lincoln's Death" (1940), "Reviewers Reviewed: A Challenge to Historical Critics" (1940), and "Without Fame: The Romance of a Profession" (1942). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in a modern, high-quality edition complete with the original text and artwork. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
