I really did not expect to like the book Shelter from the Wind as it started out very slow. As I continued to read, I realized the simplicity of it and the wonderful messages it provided. Although it is a short chapter book, it has many messages for young readers. The main character Stacy runs away from home, only to find herself coming to terms with her real demons through the help of an old woman named Old Ella. She comes to the realization that having companionship is of utmost importance in this world. She also sees the beauty of life through the guidance of Ella's simplistic lifestyle. As she lives alone, after her husband left her years ago, Ella does not have any physical materials to offer Stacy. She does however have advice and understanding to offer. Their connection is sought through people leaving them in their life. Ella's husband left her and Stacy's mom left her as a young girl. Ella teaches Stacy to give people the benefit of the doubt and allow herself the opportunity to see the beauty of her life. Stacy, unknowingly, provides Ella the chance to let go of her past and embrace what she has in her current life. They help the other find themselves and forgive their past. I think this book provides a chance for younger readers to see a life change in the span of a few days through the wisdom of someone with years of life experience. ( )

Adult Reader Reaction: At first I was a bit skeptical of the story, and felt like it was going to be predictable. It definitely wasn't. Stacy is a young girl that all young readers can relate to, and Ella is a character to be admired and feared. Although there is no "year" associated with the story, it is easy to envision rural, small-town life in the early 1900s.

Pros: This slim novel (106 pages) packs a powerful, endearing story that will stay with readers a very long time. This is a very strong candidate for a high interest / low readability book for high school students.
