Mignola and Davis coming together on BPRD is absolutely killer. I was very nervous about this after the first two entries and I can’t wait to see what’s next. ( )

This is the first of the BPRD trades that has lived up to the Hellboy comics IMO.

The art by Guy Davis is wonderful, detailed but not too realistic.

As for the story, it was nice to have something with some substance. In the past trades I always felt like the short stories were rushed, so you never got to delve into them. While the main plot of this trade felt short, it set up enough future story lines that it didn't feel pointless. And it was nice to get a Liz who didn't need rescuing, and some more Abe back story. I actually think what we witnessed of Abe's origin was some of the best parts of this, I hope we get some answers in the future. ( )

Zkratka Ú. P. V. O. znamená Úřad paranormálního výzkumu a obrany, který by vám měl být více než povědomý, pokud jste někdy zavítali do světa Hellboye. Pro fanoušky rohatého bojovníka je tahle pobočná série naprostou nutností.

Přestože má tenhle díl pořadové číslo tři, jedná se o začátek celé série Ú. P. V. O.! Minulé díly byly pouze sebranými povídkami náhodně vytvořenými různými tvůrci pro různé příležitosti.

V tomhle třetím díle dojde k dokončení příběhů Hellboye 1: Sémě zkázy a Hellboye 2: Probuzení ďábla. Dozvíte se víc o Rasputinově plánu na zkázu celého světa a hlavně velké tajemství, které si Mike Mignola nechával dlouho pro sebe – původ Abe Sapiena.

Scénáře se ujal sám Mike Mignola a nakreslil Guy Davis, kterého znáte jako autora povídky Hluboké vody z Ú. P. V. O. 2.

O knize
Při přestřelce v jisté tajné laboratoři unikne obří spóra a vypukne žabí mor. Agenti Úřadu paranormálního výzkumu a obrany mají plné ruce práce aby zastavili šílence, který se snaží dokončit plány na zničení světa, započaté mnichem Rasputinem v knize Hellboy 1: Sémě zkázy.
Poprvé se v této knize Ú. P. V. O. ujal sám Mike Mignola psaní dalších příběhů svých fantastických hrdinů a poodhalil roušku jednoho z jejich největších tajemství – původ Abea Sapiena.

The first trade so far that was a complete story and I really dug it. It makes me realize I need to include Hellboy in my Mignolaverse read through as this story ties into the first Hellboy story. Still, they give you enough to go on and it really is a great story with an unexpected reveal about Abe at the end. The Guy Davis art is really great, a perfect pairing with the horror/supernatural story. ( )

This one wraps up a lot of previously open plot points from the first five Hellboy stories. Sadu-Hem, introduced in Seed of Destruction, apparently survived and the BPRD has been studying him. Of course, acolytes of the end of the world don't like that idea, so all hell breaks loose.

The frog monsters are back, the devoted children of Sadu-Hem, taking over a whole town, reminiscent of Lovecraft's population of Innsmouth.

Things get dark for the Bureau, and not everyone is guaranteed to make it out alive.

Excellent start to an even larger ongoing (well, continuing really) story in the Hellboy/BPRD universe. Also, the origin of Abe Sapien! ( )
