This book represents a staggering amount of erudition and research into the obscure byways of Canadian history, lore, and culture. With the aid of the illustrations (I repeat, a staggering amount of research!) I was able to identify, vaguely recall, or guess at most of the references. A young child could not! It's a book suitable for people able to read at a fairly high level, at least mid-elementary school, and to consult the glossary/end notes at the back of the book, where they will learn that Anik was the first satellite capable of broadcasting "a mari usque ad mare", but not how to pronounce it nor what year it was launched. The front flap's suggestion "a cherished souvenir for visitors to Canada" is a good idea for such an eclectic collection of Canadian minutiae. Or set your 10 year old to browsing and be prepared to have a startlingly well-informed child.

A refreshing take on the traditional alphabet book. Infused with many Canadian terms and concepts, will make reading this book more meaningful to children as they relate it to their own surroundings and life. Illustrations are eye catching and colorful.

As much as I loved this book, I have to admit I was glad for the definitions in the back. Even my Canadian husband (I'm from the States) couldn't tell me what all of the words were, though the way his face lit up on some of them was worth the confusion. This is a wonderful book for Canadian children and a wonderful book for children in other countries trying to get a primer in Canadian culture. ( )
