The 4th edition of this popular and well-cited text is now co-authored, and includes significant changes from earlier texts. Presenting a comprehensive review of over a century of research on information behavior (IB), this book is intended for students in information studies and disciplines interested in research on information activities. The initial two chapters introduce IB as a multi-disciplinary topic, the 3rd provides a brief history of research on information seeking. Chapter four discusses what is meant by the terms "information" and "knowledge. "Chapter five discusses "information needs," and how they are addressed. The 6th chapter identifies many related concepts. Twelve models of information behavior (expanded from earlier editions) are illustrated in chapter seven. Chapter eight reviews various paradigms and theories informing IB research. Chapter nine examines research methods invoked in IB studies and a discussion of qualitative and mixed approaches. The 10th chapter gives examples of IB studies by context. The final chapter looks at strengths and weaknesses, recent trends, and future development.… (mehr)

An excellently written textbook about resseach within LIS concerning information needs, seeking and behaviour. Given examples of various occupations and situations are well chosen and very clear. ( )

This book is an excellent primer on the field of information behavior. Unlike most textbooks, this book walks the fine line between being beyond the beginner and being patronizingly didactic. It is also a handy research tool with a glossary, author index, topic index, discussion questions, an extensive bibliography at the end of the book and recommended readings at the end of each chapter. The book has 13 chapters, which makes it perfect for assigning a chapter a week in the standard semester. This is definitely one of the most readable and interesting textbooks I've encountered in my academic career. ( )

"A welcome and ambitious book that should be received with open arms... With all that said, although the book is ambitious it is not exhaustive and some areas have been left out..."

"Overall, this second edition confirms the work as one of the most useful 'standard works' in the information science canon and it will serve as a valuable reference source for teachers and students alike, although the price is still likely to be a deterrent to purchase."
