After the slight letdown of book two, I was needing this book to be on par with what I experienced in the first book, and I’m happy to say that Bloodwitch fully delivered. As you can expect from the title this book offers us more of an insight into the Bloodwitch Aeduan and his past, just as Windwitch did with Merik and the Nihars. It is also a book where all the stories, all the journeys and adventures of the previous two books come together at last. All that waiting as a reader finally pays off in this book and it’s exactly what I was hoping for – with a few extra surprises along the way.

The best fantasy epics for me are the ones that throw out some twists and turns that I didn’t see coming and Bloodwitch has its share of those. Some are a delight and others are ones that will make your heartache. I wasn’t quite reaching for a box of tissues although I’m sure as The Witchlands series continues I’m probably going to be. This is a series that is not going to pull its punches.

I'm honestly a bit confused about the rave reviews for this. Nothing happened for 400 pages, then everything happened all at once but none of it was interesting or particularly moving. I enjoyed the relationship between the titular character and Iseault, but other than that I was mostly bored by the whole thing. Like, this was 400 pages of two days where people run around and betray each other and nothing is explained. What am I missing? ( )

I feel bad DNF'ing this because I really, really was looking forward to reading this and was hoping to like it. Unfortunately, it failed to pull me in and I've had to force myself through the last 20-odd pages I read and I cannot make myself read any further. The writing just feels too unpolished, the characters undeveloped (and immature for their supposed ages,) and the story itself feels rushed and confused. I think it could have benefited if it had slowed down and given me any reason to care about any of the characters or anything going on, but unfortunately, I don't care about any of it. The concept is interesting at a very, very high level but that doesn't really matter much when the execution is so lacking. ( )

If, like me, you've been reading the Witchlands as each book is published, I highly recommend re-reading the first two books before Bloodwitch. There were so many characters and interconnecting story lines that I spent a good bit of time just remembering who was who. By the final pages, I was in love with Iseult, Safi, and the rest of the gang all over again.

Given the Aeduan-centric synopsis, and the title, I was anticipating a lot of Bloodwitch action in the story. However, Aeduan and Iseult share page time nearly equally with Safi and the others.

I'm not 100% sure what is going on with the lore, but I'm 100% here for it. ( )
