""Know your own happiness. You want nothing but patience - or give it a more fascinating name, call it hope."--Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility Just a few years after their father's business scandal shatters their lives, Jane and Celia Woodward find themselves forced out of their San Francisco tea shop. The last thing Jane wants is to leave their beloved shop on Valencia Street, but when Celia insists on a move to Austin, Texas, the sisters pack up their kid sister Margot and Jane's tea plants, determined to start over yet again. But life in Austin isn't all sweet tea and breakfast tacos. Their unusual living situation is challenging and unspoken words begin to fester between Jane and Celia. When Jane meets and falls for up-and-coming musician Sean Willis, the chasm grows deeper. While Sean seems to charm everyone in his path, one person is immune - retired Marine Captain Callum Beckett. Callum never meant to leave the military, but the twin losses of his father and his left leg have returned him to the place he least expected--Texas. In this modern spin on the Austen classic, Sense and Sensibility, the Woodward sisters must contend with new ingredients in unfamiliar kitchens, a dash of heartbreak, and the fragile hope that maybe home isn't so far away"-- "This hip contemporary romance combines Jane Austen-inspiration and foodie fiction in a witty and engaging tale of two sisters who are forced to uproot to unfamiliar Austin, Texas, after high rent and broken relationships force them away from their San Francisco life"--… (mehr)

(I am using this for my "Book with a City in the Title" category of Extreme Book Nerd)

"Sense and Sensibility" set in Austin. Complete with Torchy's Tacos and 6th Street references. And tons of tea references and recipes! What's not to love?

I absolutely loved the Colonel Brandon character. The Elinor and Marianne characters needed more.....depth or something. Anyway, it was a light fluffy read! ( )

Jane has always been close with her older sister, Celia, since their mother passed away and their father left them to be a pseudo-parent to their younger sister, Margot. When the rent on the property where they run their small tea shop in San Francisco suddenly goes up, the sisters must face a difficult decision. An offer from extended family sees the sisters moving to Austin, Texas where they hope to set up a new shop. But the relocation puts a strain on their relationships with each other and romantic entanglements complicate things further.

A gentle romance and a charming contemporary interpretation of Sense and Sensibility. As with any re-telling it's highly enjoyable to see an author take the familiar plot points and make them work in a modern setting while still being original as well. I found it interesting the author chose to do alternating first-person perspectives between Jane (Marianne) and Callum Beckett (Colonel Brandon), since so much of the original follows Elinor. There's also a bunch of recipes included in the novel, which I admit to skimming but do look tasty. If you enjoy a good Austen re-telling you can't go wrong picking up this one. ( )

Sense and Sensibility spin off recreated in modern times. Very fun to read. Three sisters Celia, baby sister Margot and our protagonist , Jane, lead us through a delightful tale of survival and romantic foibles that all come out right in the end. I loved the moved to Austin, TX for their tea business and the lovely group of characters and scoundrels we encounter along the way. The father and his sleazy business practices are modernized in a very believable way. ( )

This was a lovely, clever update of "Sense and Sensibility" set in present day Austin, Texas. It was fun identifying all the characters as they came along (So he's the Willoughby! And there's the Colonel Brandon!) S&S was about Elinor and Marianne Dashwood - two sisters who need to marry well due to the very limited social and economic opportunities available to women in the early 19th century. I loved the ingenious ways that the author managed to create parallel situations in this new story and make them believable (for the most part - there are a few that don't work); even though Celia and Jane were two thoroughly modern women free to move wherever they wished, run their own business, and marry or not as they chose. It's a bit slow moving at times, but I believe fans of Jane Austin will enjoy this retelling.
